Message from the Executive Manager

Daryl M

Meet our new Executive Manager - Dr. Daryl McCartney (Bio)

As the Executive Manager of the EWMCE, it gives me pleasure to share some of our recent successes and to invite you to our conference, "Waste: The Social Context," coming to Edmonton next week (May 8 to 11). This conference will be the third in a series of international conferences looking at the social aspects of wastewater and solid waste management. Please click on the link located to the left to learn more about this opportunity. I hope to see you there!

This is my first E-News Express as the Executive Manager of the EWMCE. I'm excited about our accomplishments. More importantly, I'm looking forward to the future and the impact we'll have as we strive to assist with the creation and implementation of sustainable waste management practices in Alberta, Canada, and the world.

Our Education and Training programs continue to grow. We now have eight courses in the Advanced Wastewater Training Module (AWTM) series. The courses have been delivered in northern and southern Alberta and are also available on-line in the United States. Our current plan is to distribute the modules to other Canadian markets through collaboration with regional organizations. Courses and Seminars

Our impact on the research community continues to grow. In February we hosted an international discussion on how nano technology can solve some of the water quality problems facing the world. We also established collaborations with the top three environmental science and engineering programs in China. Our initial focus in China will be to provide technology and expertise in biosolids recycling, restaurant waste treatment and the separation of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste.

Our large-scale pilot work with anaerobic co-digestion approaches and a novel sludge drying technology have been keeping our technology development staff extremely busy. Both of these projects could lead to significant differences in the energy balances at wastewater treatment plants.

Connecting expert advisors with clients continues to be an important part of our operations. Current projects include: the design of a biosolids composting system; a time-and-motion study evaluating disassembly rates at electronic waste processors; an investigation into the feasibility of recycling street sand and a solid waste audit at a large institution.

Our goal is to see sustainable waste management technologies adopted in Alberta, Canada and the world.

Sincerely,

Daryl McCartney.
