Message from the Executive Manager

It has been a real pleasure over the last month to see final reports on several projects go out of the door, and this is a good opportunity to recognize that successful completion of EWMCE projects requires contributions from lots of people. Whether it is a research project, a technology development project, or the completion and delivery of one of our training modules, successful completion depends on input, not only from our own staff, but also from people in our partner organizations and other collaborators. In some projects the list of people can be quite long, but this is one of the Centre's strengths - the ability to draw upon a diverse range of expertise from wherever it is available. In any case, to all those involved in recently completed work with our logo on it: a big "Thank You"!
This is not to say that the month has been all about endings; there have been some significant beginnings as well. For one of these, three of us journeyed to Tianjin, China, to initiate a demonstration project for composting organics in rural communities. Seed funding for this project is being provided by the China Institute at the University of Alberta and should lead to ongoing collaboration and larger projects in the future. The key thing here is the establishment of good productive relationships and, in fact, this is really at the heart of all our work. Successful completions require good foundations and, in our extensive network of partners, clients, sponsors and supporters, we are very fortunate to have the relationships that provide such foundations. We look forward to developing these relationships and to lots more successful projects. |
- Jerry Leonard, Katrin Hoffmann and Bilgin Buberoglu attended Globe 2010 with over 10,000 registered delegates, speakers, exhibitors, and trade fair visitors.
- A dedicated team from EWMCE submitted a letter of intent to the Centres of Excellence in Commercialization and Research (CECR). EWMCE has been invited to submit a full proposal. This grants program is a federal mechanism designed to support the operation of research and/or commercialization centres that bring together people, services and research infrastructure to position Canada at the forefront of breakthrough innovations in priority areas.
