Message from the Executive Manager

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Edmonton Waste Management Centre of Excellence's (EWMCE) latest seminar on biosolids management. Just going by the substantial attendance, this is a topic of growing importance and interest. As explained at the seminar, there is some regulatory 'push' behind this interest in Canada but, in my travels, I have noticed that the interest and need for sustainable solutions in this area is international. The Centre is very fortunate that, in addition to internal biosolids expertise, it is able to access an enormous amount of practical as well as theoretical knowledge in this area within its partner organizations. As an Edmonton regional biosolids management strategy takes shape, we are working with our partners to integrate and extend this knowledge to create a sustainable model that others will be moved to emulate. The free exchange of ideas and approaches, such as that at the seminar, is just one more way that the Centre can contribute to technical innovation and progress. And speaking of the free exchange of ideas, the EWMCE will be holding its third conference on the social aspects of waste management in the spring of 2011. Watch for more details in future issues of E-news and on our website!
Regards,
Dr. Jerry Leonard

Linkages 2010 Forum
SEIMA Business Expo and Trade Show January 11, 2010
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Linkages 2010 Forum offered technology researchers/innovators, private sector firms, and investors the opportunity to meet and formulate action plans toward developing and commercializing technology in the municipal infrastructures.
At Linkages 2010, Dr. Jerry Leonard, Executive Manager of the Edmonton Waste Management Centre of Excellence presented information about the Centre's many capabilities, including the design and implementation of a cost saving technology for the City of Edmonton that improves the effectiveness of recycling winter sand. The recovered sand is suitable for re-use on city streets reducing the need to buy new sand and lowering the cost of mining and transportation of new sand into the city. Linkages 2010 Forum in Saskatoon was an even larger and more vibrant event than its inaugural Forum in 2009. The Saskatchewan Environmental Industry and Managers Association (SEIMA) hosted Linkages 2010 at the Radisson Hotel in Saskatoon on January 12, 2010. The Forum was organized and funded by SEIMA; the National Research Council Centre for Sustainable Infrastructure Research (NRC-CSIR); Communities of Tomorrow (CT), SpringBoard West Innovations; and, the Entrepreneurial Foundation of Saskatchewan (EFSK). Further funding was provided by: Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC); EnterpriseSaskatchewan; and, the National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP). The event was held in conjunction with SEIMA's Business Expo and Trade Show which took place on Monday, January 11, 2010.
