Message from the Executive Manager

The New Year brings the hopes of new beginnings for future opportunities. Inevitably, there will be new challenges to face and overcome. However, there is something exciting about turning over a new calendar page that opens up our minds to the endless fresh possibilities. I believe that this is particularly true of the Centre as we enter 2010. Many accomplishments were achieved in 2009, but 2010 will certainly be a year full of change and opportunity!

At the Board level, a number of Members will be moving on as they pursue career changes and other opportunities in their personal and professional lives. I would like to thank these people collectively for the enormous amount of time, effort, and direction that they have provided to the Centre over the years. Within our management group, we are very sorry to be losing the services of Lucy Rachynski, Education and Training Program Manager. Lucy has done an amazing job building Education Program from the ground up over the past two years. It is poised for great success, and I am confident that we will be able to appoint a successor for Lucy in early January to maintain the momentum and success of this key element of the Centre.

Another major change that will occur in 2010 relates to my own position. I have decided to step down as Executive Manager at the end of June and, simultaneously, to embark on a phased retirement from my position at the University of Alberta. I anticipate that I will continue to work with the Centre in some capacity to provide continuity. However, I have taken this decision from a position of great confidence that the Centre is firmly established and ready for a new shot of energy to lead it to new heights!

We look forward to working with you - our partners, clients, friends and supporters - as these changes give rise to new opportunities.

With best wishes for 2010,

Dr. Jerry Leonard

Biorefining Conversions Network Strategic Retreat
November 4 - 5, 2009
Jasper, Alberta

Dr. Kathleen Londry attended the Biorefining Conversions Network Strategic Retreat in Jasper, Alberta. This event was a big success.

The Biorefining Conversions Network is a research network based out of the University of Alberta, and is focused on aligning local and global research communities in the area of biorefining conversion technologies.

Pollutec Horizons
December 1 - 5, 2009
Paris, France

Dr. Jerry Leonard just recently attended the 2009 Pollutec Horizon, one of the world's leading environmental events, which took place in Paris from December 1 - 4, 2009. Dr. Leonard gave two very informative presentations on Waste Management. Alberta's expertise was well represented within the Canadian Pavilion as well as the speaker series.

This conference provided an opportunity to shed light on tomorrow's environmental techniques based on Canadian know-how. A special focus was devoted to Canada, the guest of honor at this 2009 edition.

Over a period of 4 days Pollutec Horizon attracted over 40,000 decision makers from industry, construction, the service sector and local authorities in search of comprehensive solutions to the environmental and economic challenges of today and tomorrow.

Over 1,400 exhibitors from 35 different countries and 5,400 international visitors from 103 countries as well as approximately 400 journalists from across the globe made Pollutec Horizon their destination of choice.

TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT UPDATES
  • Performance verification of a physical/chemical treatment system for municipal wastewater, conducted under contract to Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Canada: The project entailed a very specialized statistical analysis component for which a mathematics researcher was engaged.
  • Application of micro-bubble aeration to the biological nutrient removal process to assess the potential for energy savings: This was an NRC (National Research Council) Industrial Research Assistance Program funded project. The study results indicated that the technology likely has better application to a traditional activated sludge process, and future work may be done in this area.

The following projects are currently under way:
  • Performance assessment of a struvite crystallization process in Edmonton: This process crystallizes the minerals in a controlled manner, producing a high-value fertilizer product.
  • Sludge management in melting ponds for snow removed from Edmonton's streets: This multi-faceted, long-term project aims to assist in optimizing the design and management of the snow melt sites, develop new approaches to separating sediments from runoff water, and identifying methods to reduce disposal costs. In addition, the project aims at reducing environmental impact through re-use of the residual streams.
  • Assessment of biosolids thickening technologies to support a biosolids drying demonstration project: This project aims to identify several technologies to take biosolids in various forms and post-digestion thicken them to 12% to 15% solids, which has been identified as optimal as a feed source for the novel drying technology. This could yield a number of bench and pilot-scale follow up studies for EWMCE.

The 2nd International Conference on Waste Engineering and Management (ICWEM)
October 13 - 15, 2010
Shanghai, China

Jointly organized by the China Civil Engineering Society, Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and in partnership of the Tongji University, the theme for the ICWEM 2010 is "Construction waste recycling and civil engineering sustainable development".

The Conference is a bi-annual event first held in Hong Kong in 2008. It aims at providing a forum for exchange of ideas and experiences in the field of waste engineering and management, and to develop a closer working relationship among scientists, engineers, industrialists and policy makers in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Canada.
