Message from the Executive Manager

During the past month, I had the pleasure of traveling to Tianjin, China, to discuss EWMCE involvement in a rural waste management project. More details of this are provided elsewhere in this newsletter, but I would like to mention one particular incident. One morning of the visit was devoted to presentations by myself and Dr. Shouhai Yu from the University of Alberta on various aspects of solid waste management - including the desirability of following the hierarchy of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover. Following the presentations, our hosts arranged to have lunch brought to the meeting room and ordered it from a well-known western fast-food chain (I would name it, but our legal budget is limited!). This was a nice gesture towards us visitors, but the gross over-packaging and waste intensive nature of the meal was almost embarrassing!

Although a lot of what our Centre does is focused on technology, it is important to remember that successful waste management has to include a significant social component - including consumer education and producer responsibility. These themes were well in evidence at the Coast Waste Management Association conference that I attended in Langford, B.C. on my way back from China. There were some striking contrasts between the two locations, but it is interesting to observe that, despite differences in scale, climate, culture, etc., the fundamental approaches to developing successful waste management systems are equally valid in either place. Edmonton provides a great example of how these can be implemented, and how our Centre continues to help share this experience with the world.

Regards,
Dr. Jerry Leonard

The Water School - Changing Lives

The Centre is proud to support The Water School!

The Edmonton Waste Management Centre of Excellence is proud to be supporting a very important organization, The Water School. The Water School is a Canadian non-profit organization with a mission to provide clean water for the developing world - simply and sustainably. Their programs are funded by individuals, churches, and corporations who have a passion for children and their communities.

The Water School focuses on health education and SODIS (Solar Water disinfection) as the methodology for cleaning water.  The science of SODIS is proven with over 20 years of research studies (www.sodis.ch). How does this work? Ordinary plastics bottles are in abundance in developing countries, and are inexpensive. Contaminated water is collected in the bottles and left in the sunlight for 24 hours. The strong UV rays from the sun purify the water; it is as simple as that. All components of the program are locally available, accessible and sustainable at a very low cost.

The Water School has refined this technology and developed a successful and sustainable implementation program. Children are trained through schools and are bringing this knowledge and technology back home to educate their families. The Water School current focuses in Uganda, Kenya and South Sudan. Partnerships are being developed in Asia and Latin America.

Centre Highlights
Tianjin Trip

The Centre's Executive Manager, Dr. Jerry Leonard, and Dr. Shouhai Yu from the University of Alberta, visited Tianjin, China, to lay the groundwork for a collaborative project on distributed small-scale composting as a viable means of solid waste management in rural communities. An agreement was signed between the Centre and the Tianjin Institute of Agricultural Resources and Environment to collaborate on developing the project, which is expected to proceed in 2010. Dr. Yu had previously attended the 2009 Wuhan International Conference on the Environment a conference hosted by "Sino-US Cooperative Centre for Environment and Economic Development where he presented a paper describing the ongoing Centre project on carbon monoxide generation in compost.
