Message from the Executive Manager

Jerry Leonard
As the summer winds down, many of you are coming back from a well-deserved break. Our Centre and its partners have kept things bubbling along over the summer months. Lost in all the Olympic hype was an announcement of the partnership between the City of Edmonton and Mechtronix Systems Inc. of Montreal to demonstrate a novel biosolids drying technology in Edmonton. The Centre was instrumental in attracting Mechtronix to Edmonton, and will continue to be involved in the project as part of the biosolids management program that we have undertaken for the City. This is a good example of how the Centre can play an important role in aligning technology developers with facilities where they can demonstrate and validate their products as part of the commercialization process.

We have also been busy planning another exciting technical seminar series and, as the summer winds down, the first of the series-Synthetic Fuels from 'Waste'-takes off on September 18th. This will be followed by approximately monthly sessions on a variety of topics of current interest and importance across the spectrum of waste management. We are lining up some excellent speakers and look forward to seeing you there.

Regards,

Dr. Jerry Leonard

Highlights

  • A paper based on the Centre's Fish Biomonitoring Assay has been published in the Journal of Environmental Engineering and Science. The paper, Use of goldfish to monitor wastewater and reuse water for xenobiotics, is available for viewing online.

  • The City of Edmonton (Drainage Services) has partnered with Mechtronix Systems Inc. and Sustainable Development Technology Canada to demonstrate the Valoris™ biosolids drying technology at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. This project provides Drainage an opportunity to explore a new, energy efficient method of producing high value biosolid products. The EWMCE will spearhead technology and production verification for the project. Please read the full News Release here.
