Message from the Executive Manager

Jerry Leonard
March 11-14th, 2008, were key dates for many people in environmentally related industries. About 10,000 of them attended the GLOBE conference and trade show in Vancouver, and EWMCE was represented by myself, Katrin Hoffmann and Joanna Klimowicz. The event provided a great opportunity to renew old contacts, make lots of new ones, and to hear speakers on a variety of topics. Waste management was not, in itself, a central topic of the conference, where the preponderance of sessions dealt with global warming, renewable energy, and related issues. Nevertheless, waste management is directly related to these issues by the various energy-from-waste technologies and, perhaps more importantly, waste management (or resource management) is a key component in the overarching theme of global sustainability. This will be one aspect of the keynote address of author and filmmaker Heather Rogers (Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage) at our May conference: Waste-The Social Context. We look forward to seeing you there!

In the meantime, the latest addition to Edmonton's integrated resource management system was officially opened on March 11th. The E-waste facility located at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre is owned and operated by GEEP (www.geepinc.com) and will handle a large part of the electronics recycling for Western Canada. EWMCE congratulates all those involved in this significant development, and we look forward to working with them in the future.

Regards,

Dr. Jerry Leonard

Project Update

Upgrading Municipal Compost

Background:  As the largest composter of MSW in North America, the City of Edmonton produces over 50,000 tonnes per year of quality compost which is marketed for agricultural and other uses. One of the challenges is achieving an acceptable level of removal of the miscellaneous glass pieces that accompany typical MSW. While current screening systems are quite effective, the City has a policy of continual improvement and wishes to further improve this characteristic of the compost product.

Objective: To develop a mechanical system that can effectively remove and/or size-reduce glass particles so that any remaining glass is - in quantity, size and characteristic - small and benign.

Status:  Work has been ongoing for about a year. That work has included a broad review of existing technologies and the principles of various materials separation and size-reduction technologies, such as air classification, density separation, screening and pulverization.  In parallel, several hybrid "test-bed" devices have been assembled and tested in the Solid Waste R&D Facility. Two promising technologies are being further developed, with a goal of having a full scale working prototype operating at the R&D facility by the end of March. That device will be evaluated and modified as dictated with an end objective of producing a production unit for installation in the Edmonton Composting Facility by the fall of 2008.  The technologies are based on the principles of "bounce" separation, air classification, and impact size reduction.
