Message from the Executive Manager

It is gratifying when people go to extraordinary lengths (or distances) to work with us. Such was the case this month when Paul Arnold, a professor at Acadia University in Nova Scotia, spent a week here setting up an experiment at the Clover Bar Research and Development Facility. Dr Arnold had visited us last year and talked about the possibility of future cooperation. When he followed up with a request to access our facilities in July of this year, Dr Shouhai Yu, who is running our project on drywall waste minimization and utilization, was able to work with Dr Arnold to set up a related experiment on adding drywall to yard waste and food waste compost. The experiment is now running and Dr Yu, ably assisted by the City of Edmonton's Jennifer Chiang, is looking after daily maintenance and data acquisition. Although this is not a large project, it underlines the attractiveness of our facilities, demonstrates the flexibility of the Centre in mobilizing resources at short notice, and shows that distance need not be a barrier to fruitful collaboration.
Regards,
Dr. Jerry Leonard, P.Eng., Executive Manager |

- On September 10, the EWMCE officially welcomed EPCOR Water Services Inc. into Centre membership. At a signing ceremony at the Wastewater Research & Training Facility, Mr. Jim Oosterbaan, Vice President of EPCOR Alberta, and Dr. Jerry Leonard signed a Membership Agreement. The event was attended by representatives from the Centre's members and was followed by a tour of the City of Edmonton's Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant.
- On September 11, the Centre was visited by Grupo Delta, a conglomerate created to invest in viable business projects in the Central American region. The tour was organized by Western Site Technologies Inc. (WSTI), an Alberta-based environmental service company with proprietary waste management and water purification technologies. WSTI, in conjunction with Grupo Delta, will assess and implement Waste Management and Water Purification Technologies in Guatemala and Central America. The delegates visited the Materials Recovery Facility and discussed the possibility of the EWMCE providing training services for their project. The Centre will pursue this possibility in the near future.

Project Updates
- Enviro-Septic Systems has entered into an agreement with the Centre for the next several months. The company will be testing a biologically-based onsite wastewater treatment system. Tim and Ken Hnatiw of Enviro-Septic Systems first visited the Centre in March for the CETAC Water Cluster Group meeting. At that time, they toured the BNR pilot plant and were impressed with what it had to offer in terms of technology development.
