Message from the Executive Manager

Like many others at this time of the year, I spent a good part of the last month on vacation enjoying the spectacular coast of British Columbia. Apart from overcoming a momentary desire to visit the Tofino landfill, the trip had little to do with waste management. Nevertheless, a visit to some old-growth rainforest is a great way to recharge one's environmental batteries and get a reminder of the importance of continuing to strive for sustainability in everything we do -- including waste management! This, of course, is what our Centre is all about and its work has continued unabated through the summer. This includes work on research projects, on continued development of our training program, and on collaborations with industry to test and demonstrate a number of emerging technologies. This high level of activity looks as though it will only increase in the future, so stay tuned for news of more initiatives and excitement!
Regards,
Dr. Jerry Leonard, P.Eng., Executive Manager |
Highlights
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) visited the Edmonton Waste Management Centre as part of their Community Energy Planning Mission 2007. Since 1995, FCM has organized missions to Europe for Canadian municipal officials to give them a first-hand look at some of the world's best sustainable energy projects. This year was the first that the mission stayed in Canada-and the EWMC was one of the highlights of the tour. The delegates were especially interested in the City's gasification plans and also visited Sand Recycling Ltd., who has contracted the Centre to continue research into the sand recycling process through the FCM's Green Municipal Fund.
The Centre welcomes Mr. Bilgin Buberoglu as our new wastewater specialist. Mr. Buberoglu will oversee the Centre's upcoming collaboration with the City of Edmonton on its biosolids waste management plan. Mr. Buberoglu will play a key role in any wastewater-related advisory services the Centre provides to cities in China and Mexico.
- Attention graduate students: the 3R research school is advertising a new scholarship open to all students with a master's degree in a relevant field. The title of the proposed research is "Life Cycle Assessment of renewable energy scenarios for Denmark." Deadline to apply is August 31, 2007. For more information, go to www.3r.er.dtu.dk.
- The EWMCE has published a new fact sheet--Advisory and Management Services--which highlights the Centre's expertise at work both in Canada and overseas. Learn about some of the exciting projects carried out by the Centre and its members by downloading the Advisory and Management Services Fact Sheet (PDF).
- Planning for the third module of the Centre's wastewater operator training program is nearly complete. The "Membrane: Filtration & Re-use" module is expected to run early in the new year. The module will be presented in association with the City of Edmonton, NAIT, the Alberta Water and Wastewater Operator Association, GE/Zenon, and the Alberta Capital Region Wastewater Commission. If you would like to be notified of running times, please join our subscribers' list.
