Message from the Executive Manager

Jerry LeonardI am delighted to announce that at its meeting on June 25th, the EWMCE's Board of Directors approved the Centre membership of EPCOR Water Services, a major provider of water supply and wastewater treatment services. A future edition of this newsletter will include more details about EPCOR, but suffice it to say that, as operators of several wastewater treatment plants, they are an excellent fit with the Centre's mandate and activities. EPCOR will be represented on the Board by Mr Jim Oosterbaan, while Mr Lee Jenkins will represent them on our Management Committee. The Centre has already worked with EPCOR in the area of biosolids management, and the stage seems set for a long and mutually beneficial association.

The Board meeting was also a time for change and renewal in Board membership, and I would like to express my thanks to Dr Gary Kachanoski from the University of Alberta (who has chaired the Board since its inception), Mr Gary Webster from Newalta, and Ms Mary Rehill from NAIT, for their invaluable service over the past few years. Welcome to Dr Bill Dushenko as Ms Rehill's replacement on the Board from NAIT!

Regards,

Dr. Jerry Leonard, P.Eng., Executive Manager

Highlights

Beijing Olympics

  • On June 25th a delegation from the Beijing Changping District visited the Wastewater Research & Training Centre. The delegation toured the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant and was especially interested in odour control and water recycling mechanisms. This visit was part of a three-day trip to Edmonton to view the Triathlon World Cup and talk about the logistical and organizational issues surrounding a major sporting event. The delegation was part of the organizing committee for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
  • Dr. Charles Labatiuk, Solid Waste R&D Facility Manager, attended the Air & Waste Management Association's 100th Annual Conference & Exhibition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from June 26-29. The conference covered many major environmental issues in the air and waste management industry. Charles reports that it was an interesting conference in a very scenic city. • Korean DelegationThe Centre was visited by a delegation representing The Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp., which operates the largest landfill in the world. The delegates were especially interested in the variety of technologies used by the City of Edmonton, and also in the City's educational initiatives. They expressed interest in visiting Edmonton again for the Waste-The Social Context '08 conference.
  • During the last week of June, Darryl Seehagel, supervisor at the Wastewater Research and Training Centre, attended the International Water Association's 2007 biosolids specialist conference in Moncton, New Brunswick. Directly following the conference, the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association held a meeting regarding its Canadian Biosolids Partnership initiative. The partnership will be open to any group with a stake in sustainable biosolids management and the advancement of public education, research, knowledge sharing, and regulation.
Project Updates
  • The Centre of Excellence is preparing to test onsite wastewater systems for a number of companies. Wastewater generated at oilfield work camps is generally transported to centralized treatment plants, but new regulations require companies to treat the wastewater onsite. The first step in the testing process is developing parameters for synthetic wastewater, which will mimic the wastewater generated by work camps. Because work camp wastewater has a higher contaminant load than municipal wastewater, Michelle Aunger, the Centre's summer lab technician, has been adding various contaminants to samples of Edmonton's wastewater in order to develop the parameters.
