orbis™ and Lightsource photo competition

Last week we announced our second photo competiton, this time in collaboration with the Lightsource  podcast on Studiolighting.net. There is an orbis™ up for grabs, with fame, glory and prizes for runners up! OK, that might be stretching things, but it's gonna be fun. The standard so far has been high and you do need to show that you can shoot to the brief - but there is still heaps of opportunity to get noticed.  Click on this banner to check out the rules:

orbis™ interview series
Zanigni ID 0906
If you haven't already, check out the second installment of our interview series. Italian fashion photographer Massimo Zanigni talks about his orbis™ shoot for the well-known Italian Magilla label and gives heaps of great tips for easy, fast, strobist-style lighting; travelling light with the gear you need, working on location, talent scouting, getting the most out of your models and a lot more.

Check out Massimo's sizzling pics of Italian Big brother celebrity Rafaella Fico taken using the orbis™ on the orbisflash.com blog.

Massimo has only been shooting professionally for 18 months, so this article is an inspiration for any aspiring beauty and fashion photographer.

The flickr group is going off!

A big thank you to our growing membership who are making the orbis™ ring flash flickr group such an inspirational place to be. The group has just passed 400 members which is AMAZING!  So amazing that we're going to be announcing some random giveaways in the next week to members of the group so if you've got an orbis™ and you're not yet a member, jump on board.

You can also follow the orbis™ through our fledgling Facebook group, where we will be hosting a limited entry competition -  join now for the opportunity to win.

We're going to be picking our top two orbis™ flickr and Facebook photos every month. Winners will receive a limited-edition orbis™ sticker pack. Below are two of our favourite photos for May... click on them to check them out on flickr and see more from the same photographers.

orbis™ innovation R&D column

As the orbis™ was designed by photographers for photographers  we have been keeping a close eye on what you guys have been saying. Every email you send in, comment we spot in a forum or shot of your orbis™ mods is driving our development. Keep an eye on our blog for our current R&D series which showcases some of the Research and Development that went into creating the orbis™.

Many photographers have been asking about the orbis™ arm. I know it's taking a little longer than we promised, but we are determined to release it only when it meets our own high standards. And there have of course been a few delays beyond our control, so I'm afraid I have to be first to apologise for getting everyone so excited having promised it would be available by now. Rest assured we are working to bring it to you as soon as we can. With prototypes having now been signed off there are only a couple of smaller issues to resolve before production can begin.

Are you in Sydney, Australia at the end of the month for PMA? I'd love to meet you at the tradeshow for a lighting walkabout and workshop. It could be a great chance to have a go with the orbis™ if you haven't already, and pick up some cool lighting tips. Drop us a line or come and say "Hi" at the Kayell stand where I'll be doing regular demos.

Keep in touch; if there's anything you'd love to see in our newsletters, or just to say hello then look me up on twitter or flickr.

'Till the next time !

Sincerely,

James Madelin and the team
