Organizing Your Income Tax Tips
Canadian Revenue Canada (CRA) 2009 personal tax filing deadline is April 30, 2010.
With the tax filing deadline just around the corner here are some tips to get your organized:
- Instead of sorting through your receipts and documents during crunch time, make it easy on yourself by organizing them in file folders labeled by category. Some of the most common categories include income, investments, home/property expenses, childcare costs, education and miscellaneous expenses such as last year's tax preparation fees, moving costs, etc.
- Create a deductions folder. This folder is going to include all of your deductions for property taxes, charitable giving and mortgage interest. There can certainly be more, but you get the idea.
- Once you've filed your taxes, use a binder for easy storage. Add a binder spine insert so you can identify the binder by tax year. Over the years, you'll have an organized library of tax binders, should you ever need to reference any of your annual tax returns or documents.
- Creating a system:
Step 1: Outfit your box with six box-bottom hanging file folders labeled Years 1 through 6 (rather than by the year itself) to avoid having to re-label annually.
Step 2: Keep last year's tax records and related receipts in the Year 1 folder, the previous year's records in Year 2 and so on.
Step 3: When you are ready to file the current year's tax records, toss/shred the contents of the "Year 6" folder and move each set of records back one folder and then put the current years taxes in Year 1.
Step 4: Place the box in your attic, basement, closet or some other place where you can quickly locate it if you ever need one of your returns. Be sure to inform other family members of the location of the box.
