ARTA Canada Welcomes IATA Resolution 302

Automated Baggage Rules to Clarify Interline Travel Policies

Toronto, 08 June 2010: Canada's Association of Retail Travel Agents (ARTA Canada) advised its members today that the Airline Tariff Publishing Company (ATPCO) has partnered with IATA to develop an industry standard solution to help airlines clearly and accurately communicate their interline baggage rules to passengers at the time of purchase. As part of IATA's Automated Carrier Baggage Rules project, ATPCO will build and host a global database of all interline baggage allowance and charges. Airlines will submit their baggage rules and restrictions to ATPCO, and this data will be easily distributed to passengers through distribution channels, such as online travel agencies or check-in systems.

ATPCO and IATA are encouraging airlines to submit their baggage rules to the database by September to meet the requirements of IATA Resolution 302, which will take effect in April 2011. Resolution 302 will replace Resolutions 300 and 301, related to baggage allowance and charges, and will be a standard process in the selection of "whose rules apply" on an interline journey. In addition to meeting the conditions of Resolution 302, ATPCO's baggage solution will help ensure easier, faster and correct handling of baggage at check-in, and prevent costly and time-consuming interline disputes.

ARTA Canada welcomes this development which will make free and paid baggage allowances and related rules more clear to travel agents and their customers. ARTA Canada will continue to monitor these enhancements and advise members of any updates.
