Hillsborough County Women's Hall of Fame
The Hillsborough Commission on the Status of Women is honoring three Tampa women by inducting them into the Hillsborough County Women's Hall of Fame. Phyllis Busansky, Gwendolyn Miller and Jan Platt will be inducted in a special ceremony and luncheon on June 13, 2012 at the Tampa Convention Center.

25th Annual Women's Leadership Conference
The University of Florida Women's Student Association held their 25th annual Women's Leadership Conference on February 26, 2012. The event provided a unique opportunity for young women to develop leadership skills, prepare for success in leadership roles, and network. Speakers included Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist and Associate Editor for the Washington Post Karen DeYoung. Conference attendees included students from UF, as well as neighboring universities and colleges and members of the local community.

 As the 2012-2013 Chair of the Florida Commission on the Status of Women (FCSW), I welcome the opportunity to lead this very talented Commission. I am very proud to be the Chair for this exciting year. In accordance with our mission to empower women in achieving their fullest potential, to eliminating barriers to that achievement and to recognizing women's accomplishments, we continue to make every effort to institute and continue programs which will provide information and awareness in the hopes of bettering the quality of life for all women and families in Florida. The FCSW is working hard to address the many and varied needs of Florida's women. As we strengthen our relationships and partnerships we continue to make strides in carrying out the mission of the Commission. Please take the opportunity to visit our website at www.fcsw.net. Florida Women's Hall of Fame Seeks Nominations |
 As the Florida Commission on the Status of Women continues its service to the women of the State of Florida, we are honored to be accepting nominations from the public for the 2012 - 2013 Florida Women's Hall of Fame through July 16, 2012.
This annual event celebrating the accomplishments of outstanding Florida women is scheduled for Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee. Held in conjunction with Women's History Month, the Hall of Fame commemorates women's history by honoring and remembering those women whose lives and contributions have positively affected both Florida and the nation. The Public Policy Committee of the Florida Commission on the Status of Wom en has released the 2012 Summary of Florida Laws Affecting Women and Families,an annual publication designed to encourage women from across the state to become educated about the legislative process and new laws that affect Florida's families.
The 2012 session of the Florida Legislature was the state's 114th, and was primarily focused on the issues of redistricting. Voting districts were redrawn and will be reviewed by the courts and the Federal Government before being finalized. Florida lawmakers approved 292 bills of more than 2,052 filed for the 60-day legislative session, including a $70 billion state budget that includes no new taxes and provides $1 billion in new funding for K - 12 education.

2012 Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day |
Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work® encourages girls and boys across the country to dream without gender limitations and to think imaginatively about their family, work and community lives. This national, public education program connects what children learn at school with the actual working world. Children learn that a family-friendly work environment is an employer and family issue and not just a woman's issue. Since 1993 the program has helped to engage the youth of America in the realization of their hopes and dreams.
The Florida Commission on the Status of Women joined the Florida Justice Administrative Commission (JAC) to participate in a special Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work program on April 26, 2012. Michele Manning, FCSW Assistant Director attended and presented a Resolution from Governor Rick Scott in recognition of the celebration.

Commission Welcomes New Commissioners |
The Florida Commission on the Status of Women is pleased to welcome five newly appointed members to the Commission.
Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater has appointed three new Commissioners to the FCSW, Commissioners Tonie Bense, Patti Hamilton, and Debbie Jallad.
 Commissioner Tonie Bense is owner and director of Tonie's Dance Workshop in Panama City, Florida, is a dance educator and avid dance enthusiast. Her studio has been in operation since 1976 and it has grown to two locations and over 600 students. A successful businesswoman, Tonie travels the country participating in and teaching at dance seminars and conventions ensuring that she stays up with the latest dance trends.
Commissioner Debbie Jallad is the President/Chairman of Accredited Holding Corporation and Accredited Surety and Casualty Company., Inc. - a Florida-based insurance company holding system specializing in the underwriting of surety bail bonds, non-contract commercial surety and fidelity bonds. Accredited is the nation's only insurance company owned by women that specializes in bail bond underwriting. Deborah has earned numerous awards for both her community service and professional expertise. With more than 40 years experience in non-contract surety bonds, Deborah has been actively involved in developing industry standards and lobbying for reform.
Commissioner Patti Hamilton currently serves as Vice President and Director of Business Development at Southern Waste Systems and its affiliate companies, Sun Recycling, Sun Disposal and All Star. As part of the Executive team she is instrumental in the strategic planning and operation of all companies with a focus on sales, marketing, training and legislative planning. She represents the company regarding recycling issues at both the local and state level and is called on to participate in speaking engagements on the subject throughout the U.S. She has held leadership roles with a wide variety of non-profit organizations over the past 20 years and brings her philanthropic spirit to the community minded culture of Southern Waste Systems.
Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed two new Commissioners Charlotte Danciu and Yvonne Fry.
Commissioner Charlotte Danciu of Delray Beach opened her own law practice in Boca Raton, Florida following her 1980 graduation from Florida State College of Law. In the last 29 years she has handled over 2000 adoptions and several hundred surrogacies and egg donations. She's also attended over 100 births and fostered numerous children. Charlotte was distinguished with "The Congressional Angels in Adoption Award", for her advocacy and promotion of adoption in the country and was Palm Beach Community College Leroy Collins Lifetime Achievement Award Nominee as their most distinguished alumni. More recently Ms. Danciu was awarded the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award from Palm Beach Community College and the 2008 distinguished Alumni Award from Florida State University College of Law.
Commissioner Yvonne Fry is a community activist and advocate for women's issues, chairing the Hillsborough Commission on the Status of Women, the Spring of Tampa Bay's board of directors (Hillsborough County's only domestic violence shelter) and serves on many other boards and commissions. As an expert in the telecommunications industry as President of Lines of Communication, which services medium and large corporations as well as many non-profit and government agencies with audits, design, and management of communication and network services. Yvonne also leads Revolutionary Strategies, an IT and business process improvement consulting firm. Additionally, she is a producer in the entertainment industry with a very successful teenage performance group.

Commission Participates in International Symposium on Osteoporosis |
The National Osteoporosis Foundation held the Healthy Bones, Build Them For Life Consumer and Patient Forum in Orlando, Florida on April 25, 2012 at the Peabody Hotel. Some of the topics addressed at the forum included:
- Osteoporosis and broken bones; what's the connection
- Getting enough calcium and vitamin D for your bones
- Choosing the right exercises for your bones
- Taking an osteoporosis medicine
In addition, forum activities included presentations by bone health experts and a question and answer session, as well as the opportunity to visit with forum exhibitors. A wealth of invaluable information was gathered and will be used by the Florida Commission on the Status of Women to educate Florida women about bone health. The FCSW participated in the Forum in support of the National Association of Commissions for Women's (NACW) Healthy Bones Project. |

Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame Induction |
The Florida Commission on Human Rights Celebrated their Inaugural Induction Ceremony for the Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame on February 29, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in the Capitol. Governor Rick Scott inducted three extraordinary individuals to have a plaque with their names placed on the walls of the Capitol; Mary McLeod Bethune, Claude Denson Pepper, and Reverend Dr. Charles Kenzie Steele Sr. Each inductee had a representative from their family accept the award on behalf in their honor. The Florida Commission on the Status of Women is proud to support this historic event. |

Commission Participates in Gestational Diabetes Pilot Project |
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is an ever growing concern for pregnant women and their babies nationwide. Women with GDM are at risk for pregnancy-related blood pressure problems and are more likely to require a Cesarean section. Women who develop GDM are also more likely to develop type 2 diabetes mellitus later in their lives and are at risk for developing GDM in each subsequent pregnancy. Children of mothers with a history of GDM are also at greater risk throughout their lifetime for metabolic diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The Florida Department of Health is participating in a national Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) pilot project that is sponsored by the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP), the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) Women's Health Council, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
