I am thrilled to serve as the 2010 - 2011 Chair of the Florida Commission on the Status of Women. We are looking forward to an exciting and busy year. The Commission held a spectacular Florida Women's Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony honoring Dr. Eugenie Clark, Claudine Dianne Ryce, and Dara Grace Torres on March 23, 2010 in the Capitol Courtyard in Tallahassee.
It will be a busy summer for the Commission, as we begin the selection process for the 2010 - 2011 Florida Women's Hall of Fame and celebrate Women's Equality Day in August with our third Gender Bias in the Media Panel Discussion on August 31, 2010 at Pugh Hall in the Bob Graham Center for Public Service at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. Representatives from women's groups, academia, and media, will share with participants their perspectives and experiences in dealing with gender bias or stereotyping in the media, particularly political coverage. This event is cosponsored by the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida.

| 2010 Legislative Wrap-up |
The Legislative Committee of the Florida Commission on the Status of Women is proud to present the 2010 Summary of Florida Laws Affecting Women and Families, an annual publication designed to encourage women from across the state to become educated about the legislative process and new laws that affect Florida's families. The 2010 session of the Florida Legislature was the state's 112th, and it was held during some of the most challenging economic times the nation has ever seen. Florida unemployment figures soared to more than 12 percent, and 1 in 10 families qualified for food stamps. Creating a balanced budget was as challenging for the Legislature as it is for struggling families. On the last day of the 2010 legislative session, lawmakers passed a $70.4 billion state budget for the 2010-11 fiscal year beginning July 1st.

| Florida Women's Hall of Fame Seeks Nominations |
As the Florida Commission on the Status of Women continues its service to the women of the State of Florida, we are honored to begin the process of selecting the 2010/2011 nominees for the Florida Women's Hall of Fame. This annual event celebrating the accomplishments of outstanding Florida women is scheduled for Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee. Held in conjunction with Women's History Month, the Hall of Fame commemorates women's history by honoring and remembering those women whose lives and contributions have positively affected both Florida and the nation. Since 1982 distinguished women of Florida have been nominated by the citizens and selected by the governor for this prestigious designation. As officially mandated by the Florida Legislature in 1992, the Florida Women's Hall of Fame recognizes and honors those women who, through their work and dedication have made significant improvements to the lives of women and to all the citizens of Florida. | FCSW Participates in Domestic Violence Workshop |
Florida Commission on the Status of Women Staff Member Michele S. Manning participated in the "Behind Closed Doors: Breaking the Silence in Rural Communities" 13th annual conference that brings together advocates and practitioners working to protect battered women and their children in rural communities. The theme this year was "The Hidden Truth." The conference addressed the systems' responses to domestic violence when the batterer and survivor no longer reside together however the abuse continues and/or escalates.
As a conference participant I was afforded the opportunity to learn the latest information nationally and locally in domestic violence prevention. The conference offered a wide array of inspiring and educational speakers designed to help domestic violence advocates, professionals and community member's work together to end violence. As a representative of the Florida Commission on the Status of Women, the networking opportunities were invaluable let alone the information and resources gained. This definitely was a win/win networking situation for information about the important work of the Commission to be disbursed among the various conference participants. |
