Building on Faith

We are all called by our faith to make a difference in the community, and Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake is putting that faith to work to improve the living conditions of over 40 Habitat homeowners in the Brooklyn, Maryland community.

This effort includes a large-scale greening project that, with God's grace, will transform Brooklyn for years to come, a visible symbol of what faith can make possible.

We will be planting seeds, building on faith, and visibly transforming the streetscape of this neighborhood.

Habitat Sandtown and Chesapeake Picnic

On a recent warm summer evening, Habitat staff members and their children from Sandtown Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake came together at Carroll Park in Baltimore for a "Hab-B-Q" to celebrate each other and the Habitat mission. Stories, games and laughs were shared while enjoying a pot luck dinner and burgers hot off the grill. Special thanks to grill master Michael Barb, a.k.a. co-executive director of Sandtown Habitat. Great fun and conversation was had by all and plans are already in the works for next summer!

Baltimore City Housing Department on Site in Brooklyn

On July 26, 2012 an enthusiastic group of staff and trainees from Baltimore City Housing Department came out to volunteer in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Despite the prediction of temperatures reaching the 100s, this group showed us they were excited to get out of the office and get dirty for a good cause. They were a spirited group!

Training Manager
Eric Bernhardt
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake is currently growing our base of Red Hat volunteers. Red Hats are a team of skilled and semi-skilled volunteers with construction experience, personality galore and leadership skills. They are capable of leading both small and large groups of volunteer teams to construct healthy, stable and energy-efficient homes for our partner families.

Prior construction experience is not required. We are delighted to train you!

Red Hats are asked to commit to a regular volunteer schedule of at least two days per month. Volunteers are often assigned to specific projects so that they can enjoy continuous progress together with their team and the Habitat partner family.

Regular training sessions are now underway for new Red Hat volunteers.
Please get involved today by contacting Eric Bernhardt at ebernhardt@habitatchesapeake.org or 410-366-1250 x118.

Staff Build Day in Brooklyn
By Bobby Kirby

We were all young kids once; for fun, we would skip stones, catch tadpoles, climb on monkey bars...

Earlier this month, a few Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake staff members had the opportunity to climb once again. However, this time instead of climbing on playground equipment for fun, we ascended ladders to make a difference in our community. Together, members of Community Engagement, Development, Construction, and an intern experienced "a day in the shoes" of our great volunteers. From orientation, site safety, table saw work, and clean-up, we had the opportunity to delve into the Habitat for Humanity mission and get our hands dirty while providing safe, decent, and affordable housing in Baltimore's Brooklyn neighborhood.

While descending ladders, our minds raced as they did when we were children; thoughts about this community, the need for affordable housing, and the family who would live in this house rushed into our conscious. As children, we didn't know much about housing, no thoughts of fair market value, we didn't know that homeownership helps build neighborhoods, communities, and a sense of family, and we surely didn't know that homeownership can help impose higher self-esteem. There was one simple fact we knew... home is where we belong.

Habitat Volunteers Kickoff 12th Annual 'Women Build' Project

By Ron Cassie

Women Build volunteer and soon-to-be Habitat homeowner Michelle Montgomery actively participated in the 2012 Women Build launch.

In the midst of a summer heat wave on a recent Saturday morning, nurse Michelle Montgomery, with her children, Dante, 4, and Stori, 9, in tow, walks from the home they rent in northeast Baltimore to a construction site down the street and picks up a paint brush.

Part of Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake's 12th Annual Women's Build, Montgomery toils all day alongside two-dozen women, many in pink hardhats, in the Orchard Ridge neighborhood off Erdman Avenue. Habitat is adding 30 new townhomes to the relatively new, modestly priced development.

Among other tasks, the single mom builds shelves for the construction site's storage trailer-using a power drill for the first time - and puts a fresh coat of white paint on sign posts that will eventually hold the addresses of Habitat homes.

"I've been renting in this neighborhood for four years, and now I'm about to become a homeowner," Montgomery says, smiling during a lunch break as her kids eat hamburgers at a nearby picnic table. "By the end of the year, it looks like we'll be in our own house. It's my biggest hope to celebrate Christmas this year with a tree in our own living room."

Join Women Build today and be a part of this exciting initiative. Volunteer spots are open through November.

Call for Photographers and Filmsters

It's no secret that we have many newsworthy events and activities here at Habitat. From our ground breaking events and homeowner dedications, to fundraising events, faith-based activities, and Youth Service Saturdays, we are always busy.

Perhaps one of our best kept secrets is that we are highly fortunate to have a group of professional photographers on call to volunteer their amazing talent. Some of these remarkable photographers include Chuck Weiss, Richard Chomitz, and Nicole & Bailey.

Please join us in welcoming aboard our newest photographer, the talented Alina Costabile-Mcelroy, who will be photographing our Women Build launch event in Orchard Ridge on Saturday, August 4.

If you are a professional or professional-quality photographer or videographer and would like to donate your time and talent to capture some of the amazing people involved with our Habitat affiliate - volunteers, donors, sponsors and partner families - please contact Laura Nace, lnace@habitatchesapeake.org or 443-297-5218.

Thank you for your continued support of Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake!
