On Saturday, April 16, Wegmans of Hunt Valley hosted its third annual fundraiser for the Build-A-Block coalition -- Culinary Extravaganza. Build-A-Block students organized and hosted the event, secured amazing silent auction items including a signed Ray Rice jersey, performed live jazz and even bused tables.
Build-A-Block is a coalition of 16 area schools, both private and public, committed to providing affordable housing in the Baltimore region. Participants include City College, Bryn Mawr, Calvert Hall, Carver VoTech, Dulaney, Hereford, Mergenthaler VoTech, McDonough, Mount Saint Joseph, Boys Latin, Park, Jemicy, Friends, Beth Tfiloh, Shoshana S. Cardin and Roland Park Country School.
The coalition raises in excess of $150,000 annually for our Habitat affiliate. We are very grateful to Wegmans and to the students, faculty and families who support the outstanding Build-A-Block achievements.

Homeowner Spotlight: Ronald Moulden
|
Excerpt from Home Sweet Habitat on Pleasant Street,
by Wendi Winters, The Capital
Ronald Moulden, 53, is a former Marine. He proudly served for six years following his 1977 graduation from Annapolis High School. Once a City of Annapolis employee, he is now working in the HVAC unit of the State of Maryland Department of General Services. Ronald specializes in carpentry, masonry, demolition and reconstruction work.He grew up in the Clay Street neighborhood. He and his 10 siblings were raised by their mom in a tiny apartment above a public pool hall at 40 Clay Street.
Recently married to Anita, Ronald has grown children from previous relationships: Cardray, an Army E-7 who has deployed four times to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan; Ronjay, currently in a Job Corps program; newlywed Pasadena resident Delontray; and Mechiko, who works two jobs.
Ronald heard of Habitat for Humanity homes in 2001 and applied for a home seven years ago. "I had a lot of paperwork and volunteer hours," he said. "You got to be patient. It all pays off."
By his estimate, he's invested nearly 600 hours of volunteer labor. Ronald installed the framing in his home and helped build his neighbors' homes, too.
Outside the house, he has plans to improve the property in front and at the rear of the building. He'd like to repair the damaged city-owned sidewalk himself, rather than wait for a city crew to do it. He's also designing terracing for the front yard, which has been landscaped with bright, seasonal flowers and plants by several Master Gardeners.
In back, Ronald envisions framing his yard with wooden railroad ties. He'll create a patio with large flagstone pavers so he can do some outdoor grilling.
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake was honored to have Ronald join volunteers and supporters on site for the Veterans Build in April. We thank him for his service to our country and his volunteer work on behalf of our Habitat affiliate!

America Serving America: Connecting National Service
|

 |
VetCorps VISTA pose with speakers and
volunteers before the start of the second day
of work in Pen Lucy.
|
Veterans and active military members, VetCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), along with local, state, and federal representatives, poured onto the build site on Dumbarton Avenue in Baltimore's Pen Lucy community on April 19 and 20. Military and National Service members launched the Pen Lucy build with an incredible amount of effort, proving that America Serving America is done with enthusiasm, efficiency and with great heart.
Throughout the two-day build, set to the sound of hammers and jackhammers, construction and demolition activities were interwoven with conversations and connections that government, non-governmental, local, city, state, and federal partners were having about Veterans, service, and the "can do" spirit that makes volunteers so essential in all of the good work that we do.
 |
Koby Langley, Strategic Advisor for Veterans, Wounded Warriors and Military Family Initiatives at CNCS talks to volunteers and guests about the importance of supporting veterans when they return home.
|
The Veterans Build included over 200 veteran, active military, and other local and national stakeholders, in a two-day service marathon that formally began the HFHC build project in Pen Lucy. We look forward to future build with the same theme and spirit, and to continuing to meet and partner with our neighbors in Pen Lucy. Crystal Biles, Maryland and Delware State Director for CNCS, lives in Pen Lucy, and so worked with us in two capacities that day: from within CNCS, and as a neighbor. Her presence, as well as that of all our volunteers and visitors at the build, reminded us of the many ways that we are linked by service, and by community. Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake is so grateful for partnerships with families, neighborhoods, faith places, youth, local, city, state and government. Together, we are serving America!
Individuals and groups who joined us and supported us on site April 19 and 20 include:
Christopher Ptomey, Director of Federal Relations, Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI)Major Chris Mangclimot, Action Officer of the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Anne Arundel County Land Donation
|
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake has a solid presence in Anne Arundel County -- and we're looking to grow.
However, the cost of land in the county is very expensive. Won't you please consider donating property to Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake?
By donating land, you could save Habitat valuable dollars per lot and help provide housing for deserving families in the region.
Acquiring land in Anne Arundel County is a critical priority for our nonprofit organization, so we hope to hear from interested donors. A gift of real estate -- now or through your estate plans -- may be used to provide affordable housing to qualified families who are waiting to begin their dream of homeownership. By donating property, you can avoid capital gains tax and receive an income tax charitable deduction equal to the fair market value of the house.

Ark & Dove Breaking Ground Golf Tournament
|
On Friday, April 20, 59 golfers enjoyed the beautiful weather, challenging golf and great camaraderie -- not to mention prizes for an outstanding cause!
In December of 2011, the Ark and Dove Presbyterian Church set a goal to raise money toward building a house in West Anne Arundel County. The inaugural golf tournament was a major success and a big step toward Ark and Dove's covenant commitment to Habitat for Humanity of Chesapeake.
Russ Hester, who coordinated the event for Ark and Dove said, "Our Breaking Ground Golf Tournament has established a great foundation for next year's event with an ambition to raise even more funds for the local
Habitat build!"
Special thanks to all the volunteers who helped things run smoothly and who had a lot of fun in the process. They include Rob Yeager, Carol and Katie Fudge, Kelly Burnett, Emily Ross, Judy Cooper and her sister Bobbi, as well as Habitat's own Rachel Morales. Keep an eye out for next April's date to enjoy the outing again in 2013.
Pictured below: Golfers prepare to start a day of golf to support Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake; contestants get excited over the chance to win a car if they get a hole in one; and the lucky winners show off their raffle prizes.

Red Hats |
Want to become a Red Hat?
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake is currently growing our base of Red Hat volunteers. They are capable of leading both small and large groups of volunteer teams to construct healthy, stable and energy-efficient homes for our partner families. Prior construction experience is not required. We will be delighted to train you! Red Hats are asked to commit to a regular volunteer schedule of at least two days per month. Volunteers are often assigned to specific projects so that they can enjoy continuous progress together with their team. Regular training sessions are now underway for new Red Hat volunteers.
