Greetings!,

It is almost September and with that a hint of spring, lambs and a busy time of year ahead. This month we congratulate Arne Cleland from Pukerau Nursery who has won two gold awards and a silver at Landscaping New Zealand's 2012 Landscapes of Distinction Awards over the weekend.

There are some great short essays in this months edition and a video outlining the urban landscape plans for Christchurch. (A serious video this month folks!)

Planting Public Places Productively

Landscape Architect Jenny Wood from Natural Habitats shares her ideas about planting public places. If you have the benefit (or the curse) of living in a city, you will have noticed that on average our backyards are getting smaller, while our waistlines are getting bigger.  Read more...

Senior Landscape Designer LLoyd Atherfold discusses the brilliance of birds in your backyard. The idea of bird watching conjures up images of big binoculours, small notebooks, and wide brimmed hats. However you don't have to be David Attenborough to appreciate the truly spectacular native birds New Zealand has been blessed with, especially when they're right  on your back doorstep Read full article...

Featured Plant: Rhopalostylis sapida 'Pitt Island'

The Rhopalostylis sapida 'Pitt Island' is the world's southernmost palm. They are able to tolerate full sun, are fast growing and are able to withstand coastal conditions better than the NZ mainland Nikau. This is most evident in the fronds where the browning off happens to a much lesser extent. It is for this reason that the Pitt Island Nikau is considered one of the best Nikau for use in garden situations. Read more...

Introducing the new Christchurch Central Recovery Plan

chicken

This month's recipe from Foodlovers.co.nz:

Beef and Ale Pie

Ingredients

  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 750 kg beef stewing steak, chopped into chunks (eg cross cut blade)
  • 2 tablespoons Edmonds plain flour
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 sprig rosemary
  • 330ml bottle beer
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 heaped tablespoon wholegrain mustard
  • 1 1/2 cups beef stock
  • 750g Edmonds Butter Puff pastry
  • 1 egg yolk, lightly whisked
Method

Heat oil in a large frying pan over a medium to high heat.  Toss the beef in flour seasoned with salt and freshly ground black pepper.  Brown beef in batches and then transfer to a saucepan.

Add onion, garlic and rosemary to the frying pan and cook until onion is tender.  Transfer mixture to the saucepan and add beer, tomato paste, mustard, stock and beef.

Simmer covered for  3 hours or until the meat is tender, remove the lid and allow the liquid to reduce if needed.  Cool and refrigerate before making pies.
Preheat oven to 200 C. Line 5 pie dishes with pastry and fill with cold filling.

Cover with pastry top and seal edges well. Brush with egg wash and then bake for 20 minutes or until puffed and golden.

That's all for this month!
