Greetings!
Drainage is a crucial aspect of landscaping and there are many ways to direct water when the heavens open. Our old family home used to get a moat every time it really poured and the gold fish from the pond used to go on a Tiki tour around the garden until the water subsided. The water used to run down the main road and straight up our driveway, pool in front of the house and make its way across the neighbour's property like a small river. I am pretty sure this was an unofficial easement and had been that way since 1921 when the two properties were one. The best solution back then would have been to intercept the water with drains on the driveway and paths and connect to the Council's storm water system or dig a massive soak pit. We have recently been promoting StoneSet, a nifty new solution that makes the entire surface drain away in seconds. It is worth having a look at the short video below on how effective this system is. Our thoughts are still with the people of Christchurch and of course Japan as they face rebuilding their homes and lives. Somehow it seems a bit soon to laugh but it is always the best medicine. A website was set up after the earthquake showcasing how resourceful Cantabrians can be building an outdoor dunny - read more about it here! Regards Tim Durrant and the Landscapedesign.co.nz team
