And some feedback from our client:

The market research conducted through the Landscape Design website provided us with critical insight into a new fencing product we are developing and has influenced our strategic decision making on both production and marketing of the product. The level of response exceeded expectations and the quality of answers was very high. We would not hesitate in using this service in the future.

Greetings and welcome to this edition of Groundwork

I am off to Dunedin this afternoon to attend the Landscaping New Zealand "Taste of the South Conference". I am looking forward to catching up with industry members, meeting new people and enjoying some southern hospitality.

It has been a tough few months down there with the recent loss of livestock, not to mention the earthquake. There has been extensive coverage on the media about both these events and my thoughts have been with the people who have the difficult task of rebuilding their farms and homes. It will take quite some time to rebuild and for many things will never quite be the same.  Rebuilding is not just physical, it is finding the strength to overcome fear and get back to normality. It has been great to see how communities have supported each other.

Despite all the doom and gloom we read and hear, there is a damn load of good in our communities.

Regards

Tim Durrant

Hard to reach places

Where there is will there is a way. Every time I visit Wellington I am reminded of what it was like landscaping on steep sections. House sites carved into steep banks and seriously brave engineering.

In London we had another problem to overcome. A 300 year old terraced house backing onto Highgate cemetery. The only access to the back yard was through the house. You have to have your wits about you when you are carrying a lawn mower and bags of weeds past a an original Rembrandt the client doesn't really like. In Denmark we had every toy imaginable - motorised  hydraulic wheelbarrows.

I was reminded of this when Excaveyor came on board earlier this month. A great company based in Auckland. Sorry Wellingotn I am not sure if you have one of these - please let me know if you do. Check out Excaveyor here >>

First step in the direction for fresh water - New Zealand Government

A comprehensive report by the Land and Water Forum on the management of freshwater in New Zealand has been welcomed today by Environment Minister Nick Smith and Agriculture Minister David Carter.

"The Land and Water Forum has achieved a first in New Zealand - consensus on a way forward for managing freshwater," Dr Smith said.

Forest & Bird response

Forest and Bird Logo"Overall, the Land and Water Forum report is a good outcome and is a step change in trying to overcome the confrontational and expensive way water has been managed up to now," said Forest & Bird Advocacy Manager Kevin Hackwell, one of the trustees of the LWF. Federated Farmers response

Federated Farmers Logo Federated Farmers believes the Land and Water Forum report is just that, a report and its recommendations to Government, do not set in stone any future policy or actions.

"The Land and Water Forum report reflects a major journey, in which we have changed our minds on issues and shifted our positions after talking, listening and understanding," says Lachlan McKenzie, Federated Farmers co-spokesperson on water. Read full article >>

What ever happened to the ozone hole?

This year's ozone hole season is "slow to kick in," says NIWA atmospheric scientist, Dr Olaf Morgenstern.

In New Zealand the official ozone hole season starts in the second week of September and runs through to November.

Tomatoes Bloody Butcher
Bloody Butcher

The old types of tomatoes are really fascinating; with a myriad of colours, shapes and delicious flavours it is no wonder that we of this age, who have been brought up to think that a tomato is round and red, are amazed to discover that the modern tomato is a fruit that our forebears would hardly recognise today!  Read full article >>
