Canterbury's award-winning gardens go on show
Ellerslie

From formal English gardens to rambling country estates and city hideaways, next year's Ellerslie Garden Tours will showcase some of Canterbury's best award-winning gardens.

Eight tours have been organised by the Canterbury Horticultural Society during the 2010 Ellerslie International Flower Show, reflecting the diversity of Canterbury's landscape and the evolution of garden design in the region since it was settled in the 1850s.

Greetings!

Tis a busy time. 28,000 visitors so far this month with some of the most popular searches being outdoor furniture, fireplaces and swimming pools.

Let's hope they get onto a designer or contractor straight away before they have to wait till next summer to enjoy their new space. One of the advantages of an outdoor fire is extending the season. Here in Hawke's Bay we are hit with total fire bans and resitrictions most years - however some have been known to sneak the odd fire in... one way to avoid this is the have a gas unit installed.

The Green Wall at Natural Habitats has sprung into life. Plus they have a new installation in  'The Department Store' which is pretty cool. I love this idea, in fact I have always admired plants integrating with architecture.  I recall studying Friedrich Hundertwasser at school, and have enjoyed seeing his buildings around the world including the Kawakawa public loos (image below).

I will see what else I can dig up about them for the next edition.

Regards

Natural Stone Paving - Tim Friday

Natural Stone
There is no denying that Natural Stone Paving is the most beautiful, evocative and soulful material in which to clad the ground we walk.

After all it is the very stuff our Mother Earth is made from.

Cobbled streets of Europe and South America and flagstone patios of heritage gardens are just a couple of images conjoured up that illustrate its effect on the landscapes in which it is used.

With the right choice of stone and size it can also be the most practical and durable paving material. It rarely fades, cracks, or secretes like concrete can and it will often weather beautifully taking on a particular patina from the wear it experiences in its environment.

Natural Habitats Green Wall has grown - new images

Natural Habitats Green WallNatural Habitats Greenwall has matured since it was installed earlier in the year.

The external Greenwall that has been installed at the Natural Habitats head office covers an area of eight square metres and is planted in New Zealand natives, including rushes, grasses, spreading plants and succulents.

Natural Habitats has cemented its place as being at the forefront of environmental landscape solutions by being the first company to offer an integrated design, install, management and maintenance service of Greenwalls.  The Greenwalls are built to New Zealand building codes and horticultural best practices, using technology under licence from the Greenwall Company based in Australia. Greenwall installed in The Department Store

The department store Takapuna is now home to New Zealand's newest and most innovative venture, The Department Store, providing a multi-dimensional fashion, art and beauty experience across three floors.

The project was spearheaded by Stephen Marr, Karen Walker and Dan Gosling from Black Box.

One of the triumphs of the new store, and also a New Zealand first, is the large, vertical, interior garden or 'Green Wall' in the Stephen Marr salon on the top floor.
The Green Wall is a natural extension to Stephen Marr's environmental commitment.  It is unique in that it is double-sided and measures 10 metres long by 2 metres high, boasting well over 1000 individual plants.

BelAire Designer Fences are made from materials that are light weight and structurally strong. Add to this, the ease of assembly and is it any wonder why BelAire has increasingly become the choice of fence among New Zealanders.

BelAire's proprietary modular fencing system gives you the ability to choose any combination of 'inserts' between the posts. Whether it be BelAire's panels, wrought iron, trellis or any combination, the possibilities are only as limited as your imagination.
