Greetings!
We
have just moved between cities to bright Art Deco offices in the
heart of downtown Napier.
This
morning the streets were deserted as people took caution from a tsunami warning.
Every day I pretty much drive the
coastline from Te Awanga to Napier, so I was at a bit of a loss as to what to do
as I drove through a police checkpoint stopping people going back in. "Was
there anything I wanted saved?" Jessie asked as she waved me off.
We
live about 300 meters away from the coast and only last night I was talking to
a local about the time the sea lapped onto the road. You just don't know what
is going to happen. Most of these things are a false alarm, but the mere fact
we work in an Art Deco building is a poignant reminder of the 1931 earthquake.
And on a more cheerful note here is this months Groundwork.
Enjoy!

Book Release - Organic Vegetable Gardening Xanthe White
A month by month guide to growing your own Garden of Eden
Of all the
how-to gardening tips friends and clients could ask of New Zealand's
landscape-design star, Xanthe White says people mostly quiz her about
growing veges.
It's clear that vegetable gardening is big again, for both
money-saving, eco and health reasons, but many people don't know how to
get growing in the first place.

So, here's a book that takes readers by the hand and shows them how
to transform their backyard bombsites to organic Gardens of Eden in
just one year.
It seems impossible but it's not because Xanthe White' has just done exactly that herself. More >>

Patch from Scratch - What to plant in August / October
I can feel spring in the air and the daffodils are a welcome sight! The dream house is wonderful but the number of slugs and snails in the garden is astounding.
Anyway, I am having to make do with the vege beds that are already here for this season until I have time to really think about the whole garden design properly. So, I started preparing the first patch, ran out of time and threw some cardboard over what I'd done to keep the cat out. Well, what a great slug and snail trap, the next day when I turned the cardboard over, there was a party going on underneath.
So I collected them up, poured boiling water on them then shoved them in the compost (they are a compost activator)! I'm now doing it every few days and getting more and more!

Jan White Art
Initially Jan White trained as a designer and then as a painter. After
a decade or so, she began working with three dimensional sculptural
forms in a variety of materials: clay and wax for casting in metal,
wood, perspex, scrap metal, slate, stone and found objects. In these
sculptural works, White attempts to reduce form to the barest
reflection of a meaningful coda. Themes she works with contemplate
issues around the fourth dimension (the philosophical/spiritual), the
purpose of a human life, and long-standing Western cultural values
based on Neo-Platonic humanism developed during the Renaissance. More >>

Trees still protected in Auckland
Auckland City Council's restrictions on the removal of trees still
apply until 1 January 2012 despite the passing of the Resource
Management (Simplifying & Streamlining) Amendment Bill last night.
However, from 1 October this year, there will be changes to the
pruning rules which will enable trimming of non-scheduled trees on
private land. Previously consent was required before trimming trees
that were covered by the general tree protection.

Strike while the iron is hot - Garden pest control with Wally Richards
A good hard, cold winter takes its toll on insect populations from
last summer, dramatically reducing their numbers before heading into
the new season.
I was surprised to find the first leaf hopper in my garden the other
day along with a small number of whitefly. A couple of gardeners from
other parts of New Zealand informed that they had already seen the odd
white butterfly flitting around their cabbages.
This means that the early emergence of pest insects bodes problems
in the weeks ahead, as it does not take long before eggs are laid and
grubs are into our gardens. More >>

Council announces Ellerslie International Flower Show purchase price
Christchurch City Council meeting agreed to make public its purchase price of the Ellerslie International Flower Show.
The decision followed a recommendation earlier this month from the
Chief Ombudsman that the Council should disclose the amount it paid for
Ellerslie.
Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said Council had agreed to release the
figure because the Ombudsman found the quantum of funding was
significantly greater than for other events.

Design competition to replace Hook of Maui
A competition will be rerun to design a gateway sculpture for the northern entrance to Wellington City following the decision by Wellington City Council and the Wellington Sculpture Trust not to pursue the Hook of Maui and Receding Waters. The sculpture, a collaboration by Claude Hidber, Taika Waititi and landscape architects Wraight & Associates, was selected by the Wellington Sculpture Trust following a call for proposals in 2004. It was due to be completed in June next year. More >>
