Groundwork
July
'09

After what seems like months of winter, there are finally a few daffodils starting to flower and the mornings seem to be getting slightly warmer and lighter. I noticed this especially on Sunday morning when we went on our weekly pilgrimage to the local farmers market at the Hastings Show Grounds.  The sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky and the ground was still damp from the previous day's relentless rain. The muddy car-parking paddock was full of vehicles - from Range Rovers to practical family wagons.  Even the odd vintage art deco car fresh from the Deco Decanted weekend; the car park is a taste of Hawke's Bay in its own right.

Inside the market's winter venue, people converge on a veritable feast of local produce, sauces, pickles, wine, venison, cheese, salami, Hawthorne Coffee, bread and fish - all "trestled" under the grandstand or in the hall.  Busy locals dart between stalls, purposefully selecting their regular purchases.  Visitors to Hawke's Bay on the other hand, line up at every stall, hands reaching for the next toothpicked sample or relish-laden cracker. These enthusiastic folk line up for whatever is on offer.  To my amusement I saw a couple 'not from these parts' (you can tell by their shoes), curiously joining a particularly long queue.  They obviously wanted to find out what was so popular - only to discover it was the eftpos cash-out stall! It is always great to see people's willingness to taste new things and support this ever growing 'locally-grown' phenomenon throughout the country.  Like the farmers market, this issue of Groundwork has something for everyone, enjoy.

Groundwork  seasonal recipe

Beef and Parsnip Casserole

hunza_copperI have to admit I've never been that crazy about parsnips.  I must have been put off these beige, carrot-shaped veg as a child, along with swedes and turnips - all boiled to death and criminally unseasoned.  (Not my mother's cooking by the way!).  I do try to be good and eat all my veggies - and have, in the past, forced myself to enjoy beetroot, string beans and brussels sprouts.  This winter I have set my reluctant tastebuds on the duller root vegetables - thanks mainly to Epicurian's fantastic organic produce stall at the Hastings farmers market ...

In the Garden

Tamarillos

hunza_copper
Native to South America, Tamarillos (or tree-tomatoes as my grandmother called them), were introduced to NZ in the late 1800's.  The small, large-leafed trees thrive in moderate NZ conditions - and need shelter and light, well-drained soil.  The fruit have remained a popular seasonal treat due to their unique flavour, nutritional qualities and attractive colour.  Read more...

Wally Richards: Coming Up Roses

rosehipIt is likely at this time that the roses are in an in-between state of losing foliage as they go into dormancy for the winter months. Some may still have flowers and buds, and if you have not removed them, they will have seed pods which are called 'rose hips'. These rose hips will contain seeds which you can harvest, and germinate to obtain new young rose plants.

Wally Richards: Checklist for Spring

The weather may not be the best but each day the daylight hours increase by a few more minutes and our plants and gardens respond to this increasing amount of light. We are only about 6 weeks away from the beginning of spring and there is much to do in this time so that you are ready, and the gardens are prepared for spring.  Read more...
Patch from Scratch July

hunza_copper

Well the rain has certainly arrived which is of course great news for the garden, even if it does make drying the washing a tad challenging!   Keep those beds well mulched over winter, the birds will come and scratch around a bit so it pays to check it every few weeks and top up when necessary.  I've been cleaning up my garden tools, which is one of those tasks I always mean to get round to but it never quite gets to the top of the list...
