The autumn drought has broken too late to make a real difference in Hawke's Bay this season. However, as always, the show rolls on and gardeners can get back out and plant trees now that the ground has softened.

Unlike the now bare deciduous trees, the new 'Green Wall' at Natural Habitats headquarters is covered in foliage - take a look at some photos of the recently installed project on our blog pages.

There is a great range of things to discover in this issue - from a beautiful new documentary trailer, formal architectural features for your landscape and rare and unusual plants.  Sarah from Patch from Scratch shares her advice on organic veggie gardening in your backyard and Wally Richards prompts you to plant strawberries. Designer Caroline Wesseling writes about her thoughts on designing gardens to reflect her clients personality and needs.

You can make comments and ask questions about any of these articles on the website.

Have a great long weekend - Enjoy!

Natural Habitats is standing by their claim that they are New Zealand's leading landscape specialist in Greenwall Technology by installing their very own 'living wall' at the front entrance of their Head Office in Ellerslie, Auckland.

'The result is stunning, once you see the Greenwall, it inspires you to create more of these vertical gardens.  The great thing about the Greenwall technology is that it has internal and external applications," says Graham Cleary, owner and managing director of Natural Habitats.

Landscape design is more than just clever planting.  Incorporating beautiful structural elements compliments both your garden and architecture. If you have an eye for elegant formal gardening, treillage structures can create a dramatic and romantic feature.  Treillage is the term for the classic structural elements in a formal garden or living space - such as trellised walls or enclosures, arbours, gazebos, pavilions, colonades or free-standing structures such as planters or obelisks.

Caroline Wesseling: A designer with a passion, sharing her thoughts on Landscape Design

As a designer it is important design gardens that reflect the client's personality & needs with added "style and flair".

hunza_copper

You need to be able to quickly visualise what's right for the site and see the end result in relation to the needs and desires (or "brief") the client conveys. You should then  confidently translate the stages necessary to get to that end result. A designer needs get to know the clients so they can relate their needs and dreams for their property. It is important that clients get a garden they feel comfortable in and have a strong emotional response to it. Read more >>

Nearly Winter -
Time to get strawberries
and get rid of hydrocotyle

hunza_copperStrawberries
June is the first month of winter, and happily the month that most types of strawberry plants become available in garden centres.  Strawberries were originally a woodland plant and the modern strawberries (such as Pajaro), have been bred from these wild varieties. It is important to remember this when you come to plant strawberries in containers or strawberry beds.
