Greetings!
Whether it's a weather bomb on the forecast or "normal" winter
rain it is important to be prepared. I don't mean "bucketing" up
a stash of bakes beans, lentils, batteries and water. I am referring to making sure your garden has the best chance of
survival. For new gardens this can mean staking new trees to prevent wind rock
and wind break material on temporary fences to break up strong gusts. For
established gardens a regular consultation with an experienced Arbourist will
ensure your valuable trees have the best chance to survive strong winds. It can
also be a false economy to take short cuts when constructing new retaining walls
and drains; follow best practice, consult a professional as these measures
will help protect your investment.

 Alexandra Park Epsom 20 - 23 November
In the heart of winter it is hard to imagine the abundance of
flowers that will be on display at Alexandra Park in November with plans for
The Auckland Flower Show well under way; this promises to be a spectacular and
refreshing event. The new Planted Border exhibition concept with the theme "Flowers
in the Garden" allows for only 10% non plant material; these borders will be a
highlight of the show. If you are interested in exhibiting or following
progress please visit their site for updates. ~ Tim Durrant Exhibitor Information >> www.theflowershow.co.nz

Fragrance in the Garden with Russell Fransham from Subtropicals
Have you noticed how a lot of blokes who are gardeners tend to keep the emphasis on utilitarian function, producing food in the form of fruit, vegetables and nuts and are not so much interested in the purely aesthetic side of gardening? And women tend, more often, to have aesthetics at the top of the list.
I'm not sure why this is so but 'vive la difference' anyway! Its all about balance, I'm sure. Which brings me to wondering what are the most powerful attractions of gardening.
Obviously food-production would have been the original reason human beings started gardening and it remains a deeply satisfying creative thing to do. I am always surprised and saddened at how many people don't know that, especially if they are unemployed or struggling to make ends meet financially.
But I think the other most powerful personal response we have in relation to gardens is through our sense of smell. Fragrance in a garden can initiate strong feelings. Read more>>

Organic Vegetable Gardening with Sarah Davies from Patch from Scratch

What to plant Now: Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbage, Garlic, Peas, Radish,
Silverbeet, Perpetual Spinach, Turnips
If you live north of or within Auckland, you can grow potatoes all year round. (If you are south of Auckland you will need to wait until the ground gets warmer - we'll keep you posted). I'm using a few old recycle bins to grow mine in as they are so invasive I prefer to keep them outside of the crop rotation. Some people use 2-3 old car tyres stacked on top of each other, I am a bit hesitant to do this as I worry about what is in the tyre materials. You can also use wine barrels or even just a compost bag. Read more>>

Organic Wheat Grass Seed for Juicing with Wally Richards
Growing and juicing wheat grass is becoming an important item for those of us that care about their general health. For many that have health problems, wheat grass can be a significant aid to recovery. It is simple to grow and extract and for a reasonable outlay, (the most expensive part being the purchase of a manual juice extractor for about $130.00) you are investing in your health and well being.
Why wheat grass? Wheat grass is one of the few plants known to man that has the ability to take up all the known minerals and elements (thats about 90 if they are available in the growing medium) The Internet has a lot of information about wheat grass such as the following; Read more>>
