In the previous issue of Groundwork we featured Xanthe White and her team preparing their entry at the RHS Chelsea garden show. We had a high response to this article and many of you went to the website and had a look at Xanthe’s video diary.

Yesterday Xanthe and her team won Silver Gilt for their 100% Pure New Zealand Show Garden. This prestigious international award once again illustrates New Zealand’s potent design talent. The design combines excellent fundamental design principles that truly meet the Xanthe’s rational. “This garden aims to illustrate the unique culture and landscape of New Zealand. The design will represent contemporary New Zealand and the relationship between design and the natural environment.” Despite torrential rain and politics the team managed to culminate eight months hard work into this great achievement.

The award recognises not only talented design, it highligts our unique flora that stands out beside all the bright flowers and colors a traditionally exhibited at the show.

Congratulations Xanthe and the team !

Chelsea Silver
New Zealand contemporary garden design has come of age. We are as passionate as ever about our gardens and confident about the use of native plants, a far cry from the past, often they were less revered for the more formal and exotic species and design principles.

The gardens of our time represent where we have come, and reflect where we have been. The garden at Chelsea was partly made up of rare, endangered and one-of-a-kind species not found anywhere else in the world.

So a garden that stands out among the roses, planted with pure New Zealand natives creating a powerful artistic expression of West Coast New Zealand “blew the judge's hair back”, impressed the Queen and attracts thousands of visitors a day.

I get excited when I dream of our future landscapes, a fusion of ancient plants and contemporary thought. Where pure elements of nature are combined with functionality and confidence; evolving garden space for future generations. When designing and planting your garden it is important to consider the distant future. Potentially what you plant could be enjoyed for many generations. Often we try to achieve a “now” & “wow” factor for instant effect. This can be achieved without losing sight of an infinite future.

Gold Chelsea
Australia designer, Dean Herald and his team won gold for their design at Chelsea. The garden focuses on outdoor living and is designed around an outdoor kitchen, a relaxed lounge space and a children’s play area. The planting is described as typically Australian and it's nice to see the use of hybrid NZ flax complementing this wonderful space.

It seems that Australasian designers are at the forefront of landscape design at Chelsea this year, I hope our natural friendly rivalry will encourage excellence in design and innovation from this part of the world in years to come.

Congratulations Dean and the team !
