Transition from FFELP to Direct Loan
On March 30, 2010, President Obama signed
Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act
(HCERA) which makes significant changes to the
Federal Student Loan programs. One of the
of the HCERA is the elimination of the
Education Loan Program (FFELP) and
implementation of the Federal Direct Loan
Therefore, effective July 1, 2010 all new
PLUS, and consolidation loans will be funded and
disbursed under the William D. Ford Federal
Loan (Direct Loan) Program. The transition
will be, for
the most part, seamless; students and parents
obtain a direct loan in essentially the same
they would have under the FFELP loan program.
