CARE Activities for 2009-2010
Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education
(CARE) is a state-funded categorical program that
offers academic and social support to students who
need additional support to succeed. In order to be
eligible
for the CARE program, an LMC student must be a
single head of household, enrolled in EOPS, receive
TANF/CalWORKs assistance, and have children
under 14 years old. To enroll in CARE, students must
submit an application.
Although CARE sustained a nearly 40% budget
cut
for 2009-2010, the program has served 54 students
so far this year. CARE is promoting the success,
retention and persistence of its students by offering:
- Monthly meal tickets
- Educational grants
- Automotive repair services
- Childcare assistance
- Life workshops

Carr, CARE Program Coordinator, at 439-2181, ext.

ACE/EOPS Collaboration
Math Instructor Tue Rust, who heads ACE at LMC, is
very enthusiastic about engaging students with
educational disadvantages, the students EOPS
serves. The goal of the collaboration between ACE
and EOPS is to prepare high school students with
educational disadvantages for statistics (Math 34) and
social change after one semester of coursework at
LMC. The core classes ACE students take are English
90 and Math 909, a highly innovative course
otherwise
referred to as StatPath, a degree-applicable course
designed by veteran LMC math instructor Myra Snell.
EOPS director Jeffrey Benford says of the
ACE/EOPS collaboration, "I am
especially
delighted to help forge this opportunity because of its
potential to transform students' lives, to redirect and
enliven their sense of agency, put analytical and
verbal
skills in their hands, and place them in arenas that will
ask them to be accountable for presenting solutions
and insight to pressing social justice issues".
