    May is a hectic month for students, but it's an exciting one too. The end of the academic year brings graduation, celebrations, the Job Fair, student government elections, and the ever-popular final exams. This month we also have a new caf� on campus, an ESL fair, and the first test of our new Campus Alert System. Read on for details about all of our year-end events and important dates.


    Campus Announcements

    Siren Banner
    Important! New Campus Alert System
    A loud siren will be heard throughout the LMC campus on Wednesday, May 6th at 11:00 a.m. This will be a test of our recently installed Campus Alert System. The new system will be tested on the first Wednesday of every month at 11:00 a.m. and the test sound will last 30 seconds. There is nothing you need to do during a siren test.

    In the event of an actual emergency or crisis situation, the siren sound will continue for three minutes. Students and all campus personnel will be instructed to Shelter, Shut, and Listen.

    Many of you have expressed concern and asked questions regarding the Swine Flu Outbreak. At this time, there are no cases of Swine Flu at any of the college district's colleges. Please know that we are monitoring the situation and will notify you if the situation changes.

    Library Services Relocated for Summer
    The Library building will be closed and Library services will be temporarily re-located to the Old Science Area of the Main College Complex during the summer sessions, June 1st through July 23rd. Library services will be available Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. For detailed instructions on accessing library services during this time, click here.

    Community Job Fair
    LMC's Employment Center is hosting its annual Community Job Fair on Wednesday, May 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the third floor of the College Complex. For more information and to view a list of participating employers, visit the Job Fair web page or call the Employment Center at ext. 3331.

    You are cordially invited to join us for the following year-end college-wide student recognition events. These include the annual Student Success Ceremony and the STELAR Awards, a brand new event recognizing student leadership in learning communities and special programs. The two events will take place on Friday, May 8th.

    Student Success Ceremony Friday, May 8, 3-4 p.m.; LMC Music Recital Hall
    If you are receiving a scholarship or transferring to a 4-year institution for the 2009-2010 academic year, please attend so we can honor you. If you have friends or family members who will be honored at the ceremony, you are invited to come celebrate with them. The ceremony will be followed by a reception from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.

    New for 2009 - STELAR Awards Event: Friday, May 8, 5-6:30 p.m.; New Outdoor Quad
    The STELAR event (Student Engagement and Leadership Awards Recognition), which will take place immediately following the Student Success Ceremony reception, will recognize all students involved in the learning communities Classroom without Borders, Puente, and Umoja, as well as the Honors and Student Life programs (LMCAS and clubs). Come enjoy refreshments and celebrate student leadership and engagement in these programs. All students will receive a certificate of participation for their involvement this year and each program will present some special awards. If you plan to attend the STELAR Awards, please RSVP via the link on the Student Life home page.

    Employment Center News
    As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, LMC, in collaboration with the Contra Costa County Workforce Investment Board, is offering summer employment opportunities for qualified youth ages 16 to 24. Interested students should contact Stacy Vann of Eastbay Works at (925)706-4832 for further information and to apply. Positions are limited and will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

    Financial Aid Update
    It's not too late to apply for financial aid! Apply now on the FAFSA website. If you need assistance completing the FAFSA, please contact LMC's Office of Financial Aid for assistance at (925) 439-2181, ext. 3139.

    Stop by the office to process BOG Fee Waivers and to get answers to any questions you may have regarding your financial aid.

    Check WebAdvisor, the on-line service available to all students in the Contra Costa Community College District, for all your student information.

    Scholarship News
    The Health Resources Services Administration is now accepting applications for the Nursing Scholarship Program for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Nursing Scholarship Program is a competitive program that awards scholarships to individuals in training to be registered nurses at accredited nursing schools or programs. The scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students.

    LMCAS Elections (May 4-6)
    Vote for your next LMC student government President and Vice President! To vote or to learn more about the election, visit LMC Associated Students online.

    District Student Trustee Elections (May 4-6)
    It's also time to vote for your next District Student Trustee! The District Student Trustee represents all students of the District on the Contra Costa Community College District Governing Board. This year the student will be selected from LMC! For more information on the candidates, click here.

    To vote online, log in to Web Advisor from May 4 through May 6 and select "Student Trustee Election".

    Academic Competition Winners
    Congratulations to the winners of the 4th annual LMCAS Academic Competition! On Saturday, April 25th, eighteen teams of LMC students participated in a day-long competition in the areas of math, science, social science and English. Scholarships were presented to the winners. The winners were:

    • 1st Place: The Prodigies (Enock Teefe, Priyam Ahuja, Tsai-Yin Lin, Glen Ricker) - $3,000
    • 2nd Place: The RAWTS (Joshua Evenson, Josiah Barron, Becky Evenson, Angela Shoga) - $2,000
    • 3rd Place: Super Deluxe Nostalgia Factory From Space (Nathaniel Mikajozyk, Reiko Kubota, Heather Nichols, Dion Roa) - $1,000
    • 4th Place: The Eagles (Ramon Coria, Tomi Adams, Callid Banks, Cassandra Pratt) - $600
    • 5th Place: Road Scholars (Erin Johnson, Krish Ahuja, Saif-ur-Rehman, Christopher Pascual) - $400

    Hurry - Umoja Summer Bridge is almost here!
    The Umoja Scholars Program is now accepting applications. You will begin with an exciting four-week Summer Bridge program. This program is designed to give you:

    • A head start in English and Math
    • An opportunity to meet and develop relationships with fellow Umoja peers
    • Opportunities to participate in fun events and cultural field trips

    If you are seeking to fulfill your academic dreams, come and be part of a supportive learning environment that fosters cultural unity and academic success. You must be eligible to take Math 12 and English 70. We also have limited space to join our Math 30 and English 100 cohort. Interviews will be held during the 2nd and 3rd weeks in May. Space is limited so get your applications in NOW!
