    Important Fall Semester Dates

    Don't Forget!

    • October 31st - Spring schedule of classes available on LMC website
    • November 1st - Last day to petition for Fall 2008 graduation
    • November 10th - Veteran's Day - Campus Closed
    • November 14th - Last day to drop semester-length classes with a "W"
    • November 21st - Spring Semester 2009 Schedule of Classes available on campus
    • November 27th - 28th - Thanksgiving Holiday - Campus Closed
    • November 29th - 30th - No Saturday/Sunday Classes

    Financial Aid Update
    Students who have NOT received a Financial Aid payment for the Fall 2008, all requested documentation MUST be submitted to the LMC Financial Aid Office no later than Friday, October 23, 2008 by 2:00 p.m. to meet the next payday of November 14, 2008. The Financial Aid Office will process BOG Fee Waivers and handle general financial aid information questions at the front counter. * All appointments will be booked for Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Drop-ins will be held on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

    If you need assistance completing the FAFSA, please attend a Financial Aid Workshop. The next available workshop will be held on Wednesday, October 15 at 6:00 p.m. in Room L213.

    You can access your student information on-line from your home or office through WebAdvisor, the on-line service available to all students in the Contra Costa Community College District.. Visit the college website at www.losmedanos.edu and clicking "WebAdvisor."

    If you have any questions, visit the Financial Aid homepage , call (925) 439-2181, ext. 3139 to schedule an appointment to meet with a Financial Aid staff member or drop by the office.

    Transfer Center Update

    College Preview Days, Priority Filing Dates, and other Transfer News
    Students interested in transferring should take advantage of Preview Days that many college campuses are hosting in October. Some colleges and dates include:

    • University of the Pacific Open House - Saturday October 11 and November 15
    • Cal State East Bay Preview Day - Saturday October 11th
    • Chico State Preview Day - Saturday October 25
    • Academy of Art University, San Francisco Open House - Saturday October 25
    Students should go to the appropriate university website for specific information on when programs are planned.

    Priority filing dates for students transferring to a UC or CSU campus for Fall 2009 is from October 1 to November 30. Websites for applications are: www.csumentor.edu and www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions. UC Riverside has extended their application deadline for transfer students for Winter 2009. Students applying to private or out-of-state colleges should check with the colleges for their deadlines.

    A workshop for writing the personal statement for the UC application is scheduled for Wednesday October 29th in MA2-205. Come and meet a UC representative who can walk you through the process of writing your personal statement and offer many helpful tips. Make your personal statement stand out from the rest.

    LMCAS will be hosting a Program Fair on Thursday, October 16, from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the new outdoor quad. Check it out!

    REGISTER TO VOTE! Student Life wants you to register to vote. We have voter registration applications in the Student Life Office Room 800A.

    Student Clubs Update
    Get active NOW! Club Day is Tuesday, October 14 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the new quad. Come learn more about clubs at LMC. There will be good food and music

    Announcing a brand new LMC student club - The Scuba Squad! This is an invitation to be involved with club activities as well as to participate on the club's advisory board. The Scuba Squad is open to all students and staff members of LMC. Even if you don't know how to swim, we can teach you! Come enjoy scuba diving FOR FREE and work toward your certification! We have many activities planned for the next year. Many exciting fundraisers to include: raffles, auctioning off dates, dive -a - palooza (including the flaming armadillo) and much much more!!     Rigoberta MenchuRigoberta Mench� to Speak
    Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Mench� will present a lecture, "World Peace: Your Responsibility" on Wednesday 7:00 - 9:00 pm, October 22. The lecture is free and open to the public in the LMC Gymnasium. The lecture will be followed by a book signing. For more information, click here.

    Friends of the LMC Library to Hold First Annual Book Sale The Friends of the Los Medanos College (LMC) Library announce the 1st Annual LMC Book Sale. It will take place on October 20 - 23 (Monday-Thursday) from 7:45 am to 8:45 pm, on October 24 (Friday) from 7:45 am to 2:45 pm, and on October 25 (Saturday) from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and be held at LMC's library.

    The sale will feature wide variety of books including fiction, non-fiction, classics, science, history, and art as well as a wide selection of media items such as CDs, DVDs and videos.

    The general public is invited to attend this special event. The event is free, but attendees will need to purchase an LMC parking permit for $2.00. Payment for materials purchased at the sale will be cash only.

    The Friends of the Los Medanos College Library is a newly formed group created to raise funds to support the education and information mission of the LMC Library. The annual book sale is one of the chief means to raise funds for the library.

    Early Child Development and Education Conference The LMC Child Development department is preparing to host the 29th annual "Fall Harvest Conference" on Saturday, October 25th from 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

    Registration fees for the conference is $40 before October 17, $50 after. Registration information is available at www.cocokids.org. A continental breakfast and lunch are included.

    The conference will consist of 36 unique workshops related to working with and educating young children and their families. It will consist of training and information on the upcoming statewide standards and curriculum guidelines that will impact many preschool, Head Start, and child care programs in Contra Costa County, along with topics on accreditation, assessment techniques, interaction strategies, family partnerships, developmental needs of infants and toddlers, programming for school-aged children, and more.

    Presenters include college faculty from LMC and other local campuses, community professionals, and regional experts who focus on early childhood development and education.

    Optional LMC college credit for � unit is available for interested participants (typically, 60-75% of attendees request college credit).

    Latino Heritage Month Celebration

    La Raza Unida Student Club Hosts Movie Series Please join La Raza Unida Student Club in celebrating Latino Heritage Month. During the month of October, we will be hosting a weekly film, Wednesdays at noon in the Community Room L109. We hope you can join us and please spread the word.

    The students are also working on creating displays that focus on the history and culture of several Latin American countries. Please take the time to walk by the two displays in the Library Lobby and one display in the corridor of CC2, starting the end of this week.
