    We have Great News for you -- there IS light at the end of the tunnel!

    We are now more than halfway through the spring 2008 semester with only 7 weeks to go. As we begin to wind down, here are some important dates and reminders for you:


    Important Dates and Reminders

    • April 7 - Summer 2008 registration begins (by appointment).*
    • April 11 - Last day to apply for graduation (petitions available online or in the Admissions & Records Office).
    • April 25 - Last day to drop a semester-length class
    • May 1 - Fall 2008 registration begins (by appointment).*
    • May 19 - Final exams begin
    • May 23 - Last day of instruction/graduation

    Summer and fall class schedules are available online. Fall class schedules will be available on campus the week of April 28th.

    If you intend to graduate at the end of spring 2008, be sure to download and submit a petition for graduation form by Friday, April 11th, 2008.

    CAPS & GOWNS

    Caps and gowns will be available for purchase at the Mustang Bookstore beginning in early May.

    Contact the Bookstore at (925) 439-2056, ext. 3143 for specific dates or visit the Bookstore website for updated information as it becomes available.

    BOOKSTORE BUY BACK
    The Mustang Bookstore will be accepting book buy backs beginning May 19th through May 23rd, 2008.

    books Bookstore Buy Back hours are:
    Mon - Thurs. 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m; and on Friday, May 23rd, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

    Financial Aid & Scholarships

    FINANCIAL AID DEADLINES

    financial aid graphicStudents who have not received a financial aid payment for the fall 2007 and/or spring 2008 semester must submit all requested documentation to the LMC Financial Aid Office NO LATER THAN Friday, April 11th, 2008 by 2:00 p.m. to meet the next payday of April 25th, 2008.

    It's not too late! You can still apply for 2007-2008 financial aid. Visit the FAFSA website.

    Be sure to apply for the 2008-2009 FAFSA for the upcoming fall 2008 semester.

    The Financial Aid Office will process BOG Fee Waivers and handle general financial aid information questions at the front counter.

    * All appointments will be booked for Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays.

    Drop-ins will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

    FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS

    It is not too late to apply! The Financial Aid office will be hosting a series of FREE hands-on workshops during the month of April. These workshops will be open to all new and continuing LMC students, high school students and their parents, as well as LMC faculty and staff. All workshops will be held in the new Library building.

    Be sure to bring the following:

  • Social Security Numbers (for both students and parents)
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen, bring your Alien Registration Number.
  • Federal tax forms or W-2 Statements (most recent) for both students and parents.
  • PIN numbers, for the student and parent to sign the FAFSA.
  • Registration is not required. For more information, call the Financial Aid Office at (925) 439-2181, ext. 3139.

    SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

    Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation announces The Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Program. Students have the opportunity to receive a one-time $1,000 scholarship. For more information, visit this site.

    Housing Authority Scholarship

    The Contra Costa County Housing Authority is offering Scholarship Awards for graduating high school seniors and those already attending or are registering for college or vocational/technical schools.The deadline to apply is 4:30 p.m., May 2nd, 2008. Post marks will not be accepted.

    Assessment Center Drop-In Schedule:

    April

    • Mondays & Thursdays: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
    • Tuesdays: 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.

    May

    • Mondays: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
    • Tuesdays: 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.
    • Thursdays: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. & 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.

    You may drop in to Room CC3-524 anytime between the hours listed above to complete your English and Math assessment tests. No appointment is necessary and there is no fee.

    IMPORTANT: Please bring a photo ID card, such as a driver's license, with you. You MUST have a current Admissions Application on file. You MUST begin testing no later than the end time for that day. For example, 9:00-11:00 a.m. means you may start your test up until but no later than 11:00 a.m. on that day. Please allow 1� to 2 hours for testing.

    NOTE: Occasional variations to the above schedule may occur due to staffing shortages. Any changes will be posted on the Assessment Center door.

    Brentwood Center Assessment Testing

    Assessment testing is also available at the Brentwood Center. Brentwood's drop-in assessment testing hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and is done on a space available basis. Please call ahead at (925) 513-1625 during drop-in hours to confirm space availability. Testing may also be available on Fridays and Saturdays by appointment only.

    Annual Community Job Fair

    The Annual Community Job Fair will be held on Wednesday, May 7th, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the Quad area on Level 3 of the main campus. Employers representing a broad cross section of the work force will be available. Remember to dress to interview and bring plenty of r�sum�s.

    The Career Center is conducting r�sum� review workshops leading up to this event. Check the Career Center calendar of events for workshop dates and times.

    ESL STUDENT REMINDER

    Now is the time to get an early start in planning out your summer and fall schedule by scheduling a counseling appointment with Luis Morales, ESL Counselor. Call Carmen Pacheco at (925) 439-2181 ext. 3423 to schedule your appointment now. You can also get help resolving other important academic and personal issues.

    ESL classes are offered at both the main campus and at the Brentwood Center .

    You are invited to LMC's Student Success Ceremony! We are honoring transfer students at our end-of-year celebration. Join your fellow students, faculty, staff and family members to celebrate your success at Los Medanos College.

      The ceremony will be followed by a reception in the Cafeteria. Be sure to invite your friends and family!

    3rd Annual LMC Academic Competition

    The 3rd Annual LMC Academic Competion will be held on Saturday, April 26th.
    The Academic Competition is a fun and interactive way for students to compete academically. Students compete in teams of four in the categories of Math, English, Science, and Social Sciences. It is free to enter, and all participants will receive lunch, a Certificate of Participation, and a $10 gift certificate to the LMC Bookstore.

    Winning teams will receive scholarships ranging from $400 - $3,000!

    HIV Counseling & Testing

    BETTY BALDWIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 21st ANNIVERSARY BAKE SALE

    Mark Your Calendars for Wednesday, April 9th!

    The Betty Baldwin Memorial Scholarship 21st Anniversary Bake Sale will be held on Wednesday, April 9th from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Bake Sale Corner on Level 3. There will be plenty of gourmet goodies, Peet's Coffee, and homemade craft items.

    All proceeds go to the Betty Baldwin Memorial Scholarship Fund to be given to worthy LMC continuing and transferring students.

    9th ANNUAL LMC OUTSTANDING WRITING CONTEST

    Calling all writers! Have you written an essay, poem or paper for an LMC class you're really proud of? Do you want to get more than the pleasure of an "A"? Then enter your writing in the 9th Annual LMC Outstanding Writing Contest. Winners receive cash prizes and more!

    The grand prize winner will get to park in President Peter Garcia's parking spot during finals week and will also receive a $50 gift certificate to the LMC Bookstore.

    1st place winners will receive $25 gift certificates.

    2nd place, $15.

    3rd place, $10.

    This contest is being sponsored the by the LMC Reading and Writing Center and the Honors Transfer Program. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, April 24th. Turn in your papers to either the Honors Center or the Reading and Writing Center, Room CC2-255. Submissions must have been written for an LMC class since April 2007. Entries will be judged by LMC staff, faculty and students in one of the following four categories:

    • Personal or Creative Writing
    • Argumentative or Persuasive Writing
    • Descriptive or Informative Writing
    • Critical Analysis Writing
    DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE PAPER! Rather, have your student ID on your submission. Attached to your entry, please paperclip an index card with your student ID, name, cell phone/home phone, e-mail address, professor's name and e-mail and course name/semester.

    LMC ATHLETICS

    The Los Medanos College football program has started spring football practice.

    Beginning March 24th and continuing through the first week of May, you are invited to come out and watch our upcoming 2008 Mustang football team practice. Practice is on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 4:30 p.m. on the football field.
