Cardinal DiNardo
Cardinal DiNardo, Chair, USCCB Pro-Life Commitee
Look for Cardinal Daniel N. Dinardo's Respect Life Sunday Statement in a special edition of this newsletter next week!

Each year, just before Respect Life Sunday and the official launch of the Respect Life Program, the chair of the USCCB Pro-Life Committee releases a statement reflecting on the year's theme. Until then, please continue to enjoy the 2012-2013 Respect Life Program and prepare for Respect Life Sunday on October 7th when Catholics across the nation celebrate the inherent dignity of every human being.  This year's theme ties together Pope Benedict XVI's promulgation of the Year of Faith and the 40th Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade: "Faith opens our eyes to human life in all its grandeur and beauty" . The program is highlighted in liturgies and marked by special events.

We invite you and those you know to participate in Respect Life Month and Respect Life Sunday! The Respect Life Program focuses on the

Ken's Story: Conceived in Rape, Born for Love

By Deirdre A. McQuade

A man named Ken recently called in to a Washington, DC radio talk show discussing the question of abortion after rape. In the midst of a politically charged discussion, his personal story caught the host off guard. Ken explained that he was adopted as an infant, and at age 30, located his birth mother and learned the circumstances of his conception.

"Her story was that she was hit over the head with a baseball bat and was raped at 15. So she went away to Catholic Charities, had me, made the brave decision to keep me -- and, well, keep me alive. And then I was adopted and I have three beautiful children now, have been married for . . read on."

Michelle Balch, Intern

Michelle Balch is originally from San Francisco, California, and is currently pursuing a Masters in Theological Studies with an emphasis in bioethics from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family.  She supports the pro-life work of the USCCB through research, writing and administrative tasks. Michelle is excited to learn more about serving the Church and the bishops' mission to protect and promote the dignity of the human person. "The words of Blessed John Paul II encourage me not to be afraid to bear witness to the Church and the rest of our human family that we all need to be a people of life," said Michelle. She hopes to use what she learns from her internship to serve the Church by teaching, working with the youth and promoting chastity as a member of the laity and eventually as a religious sister.

Prayer Corner

This month let us remember

to pray:

For those who are ridiculed or persecuted for defending life: that the Lord will give them the grace to remain resolute in speaking the truth in courage and love.

We pray to the Lord:

Lord, hear our prayer.

For our nation: that our elected officials will be firmly commited to defending life, the sanctity of marriage, rights of conscience, and the common good.

We pray to the Lord:

Lord, hear our prayer.
