Passing of Nellie Gray, Founder, March for Life

Nellie Gray, president of the March for Life Education and Defense Fund, passed away over the weekend of August 12th at the age of 88. In 1974, Ms. Gray founded the March for Life, a peaceful pro-life rally for the overturning of Roe v. Wade which is held each year in January. Deirdre McQuade, assistant director for policy and communications at the Pro-Life Secretariat of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), offered the following comment:

"Today is a sad day in the pro-life movement as we mourn the passing of Nellie Gray, who faithfully devoted herself to the legal protection of the unborn without exception. Through the March for Life, she mobilized millions to protest the injustice of Roe v. Wade and to speak out on behalf of unborn children, who have no voice of their own. While Miss Gray did not see Roe overturned in her lifetime, the movement she helped build - especially its young members - will not rest until . . . more..

  • For visitation and funeral information, visit the March for Life web site.
  • People of Life will notify you soon with more details on plans for a later memorial service at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington.

"The Necessity of One"

by Anne McGuire

Reflecting on the lack of regard for human life can be disheartening and even overwhelming. It would be easy to give in to hopelessness as we recognize our own limits in the face of the immense problems facing our society. After all, what difference can one person really make?

Nellie Gray, the principal founder of the annual March for Life, passed away over the weekend of August 12th. Her death is mourned by those whose lives she touched in the pro-life movement. But in her passing, we are invited to reflect upon the work which the Lord can accomplish through each person.

The March for Life is a unique moment to join together with hundreds of thousands of other people who value the dignity of the child in the womb. It's a moment to be strengthened by one another's presence and enthusiasm. It's a moment to remember that we are ...more.
