WASHINGTON-A doctor, a diocesan leader and an international advocate received the 2011 People of Life Award for lifetime commitment to the pro-life movement, during an August 8 ceremony at the annual Diocesan Pro-Life Leadership Conference in Atlanta. The honorees were Joanne Angelo, MD, Mimi Eckstein and Magaly Llaguno. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), presented the awards. Over 100 diocesan, state and national Catholic pro-life leaders from across the country attended the private awards dinner at the conference, sponsored by the USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities. HHS Mandate for Contraceptive and Abortifacient Drugs Violates Conscience Rights |
WASHINGTON.- The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) sharply criticized a new HHS "preventive services" mandate requiring private health plans to cover female surgical sterilization and all drugs and devices approved by the FDA as contraceptives, including drugs which can attack a developing unborn children before and after implantation in the mother's womb. "It's now vital than ever that Congress pass the Respect for Rights of Concience Act to close the gaps in conscience protection in the new health care reform act, so employers and employees alike will have the freedom to choose health plans in accordance with their deeply held moral and religious beliefs," said Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston and chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities. Meet the Intern

Aracely Ornelas Duarte is originally from Chihuahua, Mexico. After college she began full time pro-life work as founder and director of a pregnancy care center in Juarez. Next, she coordinated support for immigrants and destitute mothers at a pregnancy care center in London. She completed her Masters in Marriage and Family Sciences at the Pontifical JP II Institute, and is currently completing a Masters in Theological Studies in Biotechnology and Ethics. Aracely says she has always admired the vigorous pro-life movement in the U.S. and that "Through this internship I hope to deepen my skills in pro-life ministry in the Church and take what I learn here to serve the Pro-Life movement in Latin America."
