 USCCB Welcomes House Passage
OF 'No Taxpayer Funding
For Abortion' Act

WASHINGTON-The Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) welcomed passage of the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act" (H.R. 3) by the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill codifies a permanent, government-wide policy against taxpayer subsidies for abortion and abortion coverage, improves federal conscience protection for health care providers and entities, and closes various loopholes that give tax-preferred status to abortion. Co-sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL), the pro-life bill passed with bipartisan support by a vote of 251-175 on May 4. U.S. Bishops to Vote on  

Assisted Suicide Document   

 

Care for the elderlyWASHINGTON - The agenda of the annual Spring General Assembly of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) includes a vote by the bishops on a new public policy document on physician assisted suicide. The meeting will be held June 15-17 in Seattle, Washington. The proposed document, "To Live Each Day With Dignity," would be the first public policy statement on assisted suicide from the full body of bishops. The Secretariat of Pro-life Activities is planning additional educational resources on assisted suicide for parish and diocesan use. New Videos from People of Life
Coming Soon!

WASHINGTON - Two new videos featuring Catholic bishops at pro-life events in Washington in January of 2011 will be released this summer.  The first video features the processional of the opening Mass of the National Prayer Vigil for Life at the Basilica of the Teens at March for LifeNational Shrine on the eve of the annual March for Life. Highlights of

the 45 minute processional of cardinals, bishops, priests, deacons and seminarians include shots of Cardinal Daniel Di Nardo of Galveston-Houston, chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activites, as well as the diverse crowd of over 11,000 people who attend from across the country. The second video includes the opening prayer and comments by Pro-Life Committee member Archbishop Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas at the March for Life Rally. Both videos seek to inspire the faithful to renew their efforts to work towards a culture of life, to participate in pro-life events in Washington or locally in January, and to continue to support and pray for the efforts of the Catholic bishops to spread the Gospel of Life. Staff Assistant
  As a staff assistant, Kim supports the Executive Director and Secretariat staff and is responsible for coordinating conferences and special events.  Kim, a native Washingtonian, holds a degree in Literature from Ave Maria University and a Certification in Health Care Ethics from the National Catholic Bioethics Center.  Her desire to serve the Church increased after traveling to Rome in 2000 and attending World Youth Day in 2002.  Kim sees her work with the Secretariat as a way to fulfill that desire and to contribute to a sense of unity in pro life work. "I am glad to support the bishops, the mission of People of Life, and to assist Pro-Life leaders in coming together to be renewed in their mission," she said. In her spare time, Kim enjoys writing, music, hiking, and cultural trips to the city.
