National Prayer Vigil for Life
Great Upper Church, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C

     The National Prayer Vigil for Life draws over 20,000 pilgrims to join in prayer for an end to abortion and a greater respect for all human life. The vigil begins on the eve of the March for Life with the Opening Mass celebrated in the Great Upper Church. Prayer continues throughout the night with the National Rosary for Life, Night Prayer and Holy Hours for Life coordinated by Mount St. Mary's Seminary and led by seminarians from across the country. The following morning, the prayer vigil concludes with Morning Prayer, Benediction and the Closing Mass.

     Sponsored by the USCCB Pro-Life Secretariat, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and The Catholic University of America Office of Campus Ministry, the National Prayer Vigil for Life is one small part of the Church's "great prayer for life."

     I never tire of hearing Christmas carols - even if they're being piped into stores and malls just to encourage shopping excesses. But hearing Christmas tunes recently got me thinking: the decorating frenzy of Christmas trees, lights, garlands, poinsettia plants, and Santa Claus statuary often seems devoid of Christian meaning. What exactly is being celebrated with all the music, décor, and festivity of the season?

Bishop Campbell of Columbus, Ohio

"Amidst today's threats to human life, we remain hopeful and answer the call to build a culture of life and love. Our Catholic faith acknowledges the inherent dignity of every human life, at every stage and condition from conception to natural death. As a people of life and love, we pray, give witness, and work for the conversion of hearts.

May we, like Mary, give our continuing "yes" to God through our faith, our hope, our love, and our prayers."

Advent Prayer for Life
(draft translation)

Lord Jesus,
You who faithfully visit and fulfill with your Presence the Church and the history of men;
You who in the miraculous Sacrament of your Body and Blood render us participants in divine Life and allow us a foretaste of the joy of eternal Life; We adore and bless you.

Prostrated before You, source and lover of Life, truly present and alive among us, we beg you:

Reawaken in us respect for every unborn life, make us capable of seeing in the fruit of a mother's womb . . .
