Yestermorrow Profile: Phil Nauta

Phil Nauta

A key component of Yestermorrow's Certificate in Sustainable Building and Design is the Practicum, a capstone project allowing students to put into practice the skills and knowledge they have gathered during the nine courses and workshops that comprise the program's curriculum.  We are pleased to recognize Phil Nauta as the first Certificate student to complete his Practicum.

Phil, a 26 year old native of London, Ontario, came to Yestermorrow with a background in ecological landscape management.  He hoped the Certificate program would provide him with the skills to ultimately build a sustainably designed, natural home for himself.  He got that, and much more.

"The course mix I took gave me many insights into design principles and specifics, but most importantly, taught me the many questions to ask throughout the design/build process," he said.  "I also enjoyed the amazing people I met, the really incredible teachers, the hands-on approach, and the laid back atmosphere."

Phil's Practicum focused on the utilization of sustainably-minded design and material choices in the context of a house renovation he recently completed, as well as a building design and permaculture plan for his future home   He documented the process on his website: www.onlyorganic.ca.

Natural Building in Costa Rica
This innovative course in the rainforest of Costa Rica provides students with a unique opportunity to explore the design/build process using earth, straw, cob, stone, site-milled wood, bamboo, and recycled/reused materials. The class will work on a group project at the Rancho Mastatal environmental learning center or a small community project in the village of Mastatal. The class is ideal for architecture, environmental studies, and building technology students and professionals as well as those interested in incorporating natural building techniques into their own projects. More information and registration available here.

YesterGiving: an Investment in the Future

In Your Hands

December is the month that nearly every non-profit organization in North America reaches out and asks for support.

With Yestermorrow, you know that your donations will go directly to help the school provide more financial assistance to deserving students; to help us build projects for other worthy organizations and community groups around the region; and to fund our efforts to be advocates for design/build and sustainability.

So if you receive a written invitation to invest in our work; have a catalog with a scholarship mailer; or simply visit the YesterGiving section of the website, take a little time to consider our request.  Only when our supporters are generous can we provide more scholarships, reach new audiences, and more effectively educate our students about good design and environmentally responsible building practices.  Please look at what we are doing and do what you can to give us a hand.

Changing the Way We Build

In Your Hands
Yestermorrow is constantly pushing the envelope to foment needed cultural change.

In February 2008 we will offer two new classes: Beyond Sustainable Construction and Green Real Estate Development.  Both courses turn traditional approaches on their proverbial heads and will help those interested in holistic and compassionate community and project development to see how others have made the transition.  Students will get a "nuts and bolts" grounding to get them started on their endeavors.
