Hope's Story:
A Dream Fulfilled

United Way of Snohomish County: Hope and Ezra

As a young single mother, Hope's dream of becoming a nurse seemed out of reach until she learned about United Way's Individual Development Accounts program, which encourages participants to save while learning money management skills. Graduates of the program are offered matching funds to start a business, pursue educational goals or finance the purchase of an automobile.

Today, Hope has her nursing degree and works at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett. "I love my job; it's so rewarding," Hope said.
"The United Way program taught me how to support myself and create a better life for my daughter."

The largest contributions came from The Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound ($1.8 million) and The Boeing Company ($800,000).

Focus on Advocacy: State Budget

Despite an extended budget fight, the legislature maintained investments in kids, seniors and healthcare. Their $31.6 billion two-year budget includes modest increases in needed revenue while maintaining funding for early learning, children's health, the Senior Citizens Services Act, Disability Lifeline and the Basic Health Plan.

During the legislative session(s), United Way joined with other social service groups in Olympia to advocate on behalf of people who benefit from these programs. (See photo below.)
