Dennis Smith appointed interim president 
Dennis Smith, executive vice president, has been appointed interim president during the search for a new president & CEO. Smith, who joined United Way in 2000, has provided leadership in strategic planning, program development and fundraising. "United Way is a strong organization, and I know it will move forward without missing a beat," said Marci Larsen, board chair and superintendent of the Mukilteo School District. | |

United Way teens use MLK holiday to make a difference
300 volunteers spent Jan. 17 as a "day on" instead of off, helping seniors and disabled residents. Youth United teens joined the Y and Catholic Community Services' RSVP in doing chores. "As a disabled lady who uses a cane and a walker, this was such a great help and a joy to experience," said Amber Tait.

New grants to help kids
Kids Matter Vision Council awards money to 11 grassroots programs |
Outreach grants of $36,825 for innovative, grassroots programs that help kids succeed were awarded to 11 programs by the Kids Matter Vision Council. Grants will help with homework and tutoring, provide clothing and counseling, teach leadership skills, and support gang prevention.

Certified volunteers at 5 sites in Marysville, Monroe, Everett, South Everett, and Lynnwood are helping families claim and e-file for tax credits and refunds they are owed. Call 2-1-1 or see uwsc.org for tax site locations, hours and what to bring.
