United Way of Snohomish County: Give 10

United Ways in five counties are teaming up to respond to increased needs by using new channels to reach prospective new donors asking them to consider a small way to make a big difference.

Foreclosures, unemployment and reduced social services budgets are taking a toll on families and agencies trying to keep up. The Give 10 Tell 10 campaign asks people to make a relatively small gift and increase the impact by passing the message along to 10 friends using email, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social networking means. TV ads sponsored by Comcast are also airing throughout Puget Sound, directing people to www.unitedwaypugetsound.org where they can "click to give where they live" with a map of participating United Ways in Snohomish, King, Pierce, Thurston and Kitsap counties.

"The success of the Give 10, Tell 10 campaign depends on the ripple effect, and we're asking current donors to help us spread the word through their own online connections and linking to the website at www.unitedwaypugetsound.org," said Deborah Squires, VP of marketing for United Way of Snohomish County. "Small gifts can make a difference. For example, $10 would provide food for a family for six days, and $25 can give someone a week's food and a night of shelter. If you do that and 10 of your friends do that, it adds up. We're especially grateful for companies such as Cascade Bank and Rodland Toyota/Scion that are adding links to their websites."

While United Ways are all independent, we certainly share a focus on providing for basic needs such as food, housing and transportation and on helping people become more self-sufficient," said Carl Zapora, president and CEO of United Way of Snohomish County. "Collaborating on a project like the Give 10 campaign strengthens the ability of each United Way to meet that mission. People's lives don't stop at the county line, the media market doesn't stop at the county line, and certainly the need doesn't."

The gift of generosity: add LIVE UNITED to your
holiday checklist

United Way of Snohomish County: LIVE UNITED'Tis the season of shopping and celebration - but fall is also a wonderful time to better your community. Consider these easy ways to advance the common good:

GIVE
  • Make a donation of a dollar or more per week - or increase your annual gift by at least that amount - and enter the Taking Care of Basics Sweepstakes. You could win free gas, free groceries or free rent/mortgage payments for a year!
  • Show someone you care by making a tax-deductible donation to United Way in their name. We'll send a colorful card with details about how their gift from you will create lasting change.
  • With gift cards topping the list of what people want for Christmas, give a card that gives twice. American Express is donating the $3.95 fee that they normally charge for a gift card for each United Way Charity Gift Card purchased online.
ADVOCATE
  • Stay informed and start a conversation. Let your friends know that you stand for something greater than yourself. Join United Way of Snohomish County on Facebook and Twitter and our blog.
  • Reach out a hand and connect a neighboring family, co-worker or friend to needed services available via 2-1-1 and www.helpforhardtimes.org. The Help for Hard Times website is a portal to services for those who are unemployed or facing layoffs.
  • Find your voice and share your thoughts on how United Way should make use of its endowment. Contact Laura at 425.374.5554 or email her to attend one of four focus groups being conducted monthly, beginning Nov. 18.
VOLUNTEER
  • Give an hour or a Saturday by volunteering at a local non-profit.
  • Know a teenager looking for to get involved in community service? Have him/her visit Youth United to join other Snohomish County teens making a difference.
  • Consider volunteering at one of United Way's four free tax preparation sites and help put money back in the pockets of low- and middle-income families. All volunteers will be certified by the IRS. Greeters and translators are also needed. Weekday, weeknight and weekend hours are available from January-April. Contact John Jabroski 425.374.5506 or john.jabroski@uwsc.org for more information.
