United Way of Snohomish County: Erna and ArnieMEET ERNA AND ARNIE

When your husband has lost his job and the family's only income is what you earn as a janitor, tax time can be frightening. But for Erna Fields, tax time came as a huge relief, thanks to help from United Way's free tax preparation center.

With the help of a certified tax volunteer, Erna and her husband Arnie found they qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit - and a substantial refund. With overdue bills to pay, that was welcome news. As tight as things are, Erna used part of the refund to buy savings bonds to help pay for the college educations she dreams of for her two children.

"An education is something they'll always have - no one can ever take it away," she said.

Community Caring Celebration "drove" attendees wild

United Way of Snohomish County: Que Le won a new car!Organizations that ran the best of the best 2008 campaigns were recognized at United Way's annual Community Caring Celebration March 12. More than 275 guests were the keys to the event's success and spent the evening hearing all about those who are driving change in the community.

Highlights included recognition for the President's Award for best overall campaign, Employee Campaign Managers of the Year and the Chair Challenge Award for leadership involvement (see full list below). Although the campaign is far from over, with multiple companies choosing to run United Way campaigns this spring, 2008 Campaign Chair Buzz Rodland took the opportunity to "pass the buck" to 2009 Chair Matt Reinhard.

Thanks to Buzz Rodland and John Weber, master of ceremonies for the evening. Thanks also to our event sponsors and the fantastic finalists from this year's Car Sweepstakes. Congratulations to Que Le of Providence Regional Medical Center Everett for winning the grand prize - a brand new car of her choice from one of five participating dealers: Rodland Toyota/Scion, Brien Ford-Mitsubishi, Klein Honda, Performance Nissan-Kia and Pignataro Volkswagen.

How to be happy

Science researcher Stephen Post says "helping a neighbor, volunteering or donating goods and services results in a 'helper's high,' and you get more helath benefits than you would from exercise or quitting smoking," according to yes! magazine. Researcher Elizabeth Dunn found that those who spend money on others reported much greater happiness than those who spend it on themselves.

United Way's response to challenging times

Learn how United Way is responding to our community in difficult economic times. United Way president and CEO Carl Zapora will share United Way's response to increasing needs, particularly for basic services, at a series of three community meetings, April 16, 21 and 22. If you are interested in attending, please contact Shannon Abitbol at 425.374.5517 or at shannon.abitbol@uwsc.org for details.

Not too late for tax help!

United Way of Snohomish County: Free Tax PreparationUnited Way's free tax preparation sites are open through April 15 to help low- and moderate-income families file taxes for free. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is still available to qualified households. Any individual or couple who worked in 2008 should file for the EITC. Thousands of working families in Washington each year fail to apply, missing out on their share of an estimated $60 million in cash back. Depending on their household and income, taxpayers can get up to $4,700 from the IRS.

United Way sites at North Middle School in Everett and Cedar Valley Community School in Lynnwood are open Tuesday and Thursday from 5 - 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Additionally, the site at South Everett Foursquare on Casino Road is open Tuesday and Thursday from 3 - 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday and Friday from 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Call 2-1-1 for a list of what to bring or for the site nearest you.
