Free tax preparation sites provide big returns for both filers and community

United Way of Snohomish County: Free Tax Preparation SitesIn the first three weeks of operation, volunteers at three tax sites have completed more than 375 returns, generating $820,000 in refunds. The real satisfaction has been claiming $268,102 in earned income tax credits - money that promises a huge potential to increase families' ability to afford the basic needs for themselves and positively impacts the local economy by bringing federal dollars into the community.

The earned income tax program has been credited with lifting more children out of poverty than any other federal program. Even individuals and families who don't earn enough to have to file a claim may receive money back, but only if they file. Last year, an astonishing 92 percent of families who received the credit spent it on items such as food, housing, utilities and health care.

United Way wins major public policy victory

After more than three years of diligently urging Congress to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), United Way of America President & CEO Brian Gallagher announced Feb. 5 that President Obama signed into law the SCHIP Reauthorization Act of 2009. In addition to reauthorizing this vital program that gives matching funds to states so that they can provide health insurance to modest-income families, Congress increased SCHIP funding by $32.8 billion over the next four years. According to Gallagher, this increase is enough to cover an additional 4.1 million uninsured children.
