From Dollars to Difference: How your donation creates an impact
MEET ANNA
Anna Isquirisigza remembers hiding her tears. She was trying so hard; however, she and her four children were locked in a cycle of alcoholism and domestic violence. Eventually, she lost her children, her housing and had been physically beaten within a thread of her life.
Eighteen months later, Anna is reunited with her children, enrolled with WorkFirst and involved in counseling and recovery. Her success in working through these issues is a testament to her own determination and the power of your gift to United Way.
Thanks to generous donors, United Way is able to direct $4.5 million dollars each year to programs that help hundreds of thousands of people in Snohomish County.
"These resources have rebuilt my life," Anna said. "I'm determined to live a healthy future for my children."

Borders book drive to benefit United Way ends tomorrow
Borders Books and Music at The Everett Mall is once again holding a book drive on behalf of United Way's Success By 6. Through Dec. 13, customers can add a children's book to their purchase. Books are given to children at United Way's three Free Tax Preparation centers that serve low-income families. Tax sites will open Jan. 22 and include locations at North Middle School and South Everett Foursquare on Casino Road - both in Everett - as well as Cedar Valley Community School in Lynnwood. United Way received more than 1,200 books from a similar drive earlier this year; those volumes were used to kick off the Imagination Library program in Lake Stevens. If you still have holiday shopping to complete, consider a trip to Borders tomorrow - where the money you spend could buy presents and improve people's lives.

Snohomish County Council approves sales tax to expand mental health services
In front of a standing room only crowd the Snohomish County Council on Dec. 3 voted 3-0 in favor of a one-tenth of 1 percent sales tax to expand chemical-dependency and mental health services. The local sales tax is expected to generate an estimated $11 million for an array of treatment options.
Approval of this tax is one of five points that comprise United Way's 2009 Public Policy agenda. United Way advocates that, "The local tax option will have a timely and significant impact on criminal justice needs and may result in a decrease in future crime rates. Investment in these services will pay large dividends to our community."
Bob Rommel, United Way board member and assistant executive director of SPEEA, spoke in favor of the tax on behalf of both organizations, calling the 1 cent tax on every $10 "a wise investment with a savings for society. It just makes sense and it truly represents the members we serve throughout the county."
The bill is now before County Executive Aaron Reardon. If he takes no action, it becomes law within 10 days of the Council vote and would take effect in April.

Campaign Executive team leaves "living united"
Campaign executives (CEs) - either sponsored or loaned by businesses for four months to help run United Way's annual campaign - are returning to their regular jobs Dec. 15. This fall, CEs delivered 661 workplace presentations and secured the support of 23 new businesses. Thank you to donors, supporting companies and the CE team for stepping up in tough times! Here are a few highlights:
- Employees at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett pledged $39,000 more than last year, a 130 percent increase.
- The staff at the Snohomish School District grew their giving by 32 percent.
- Community Health Center of Snohomish County hit 125 percent of their goal with employee participation as high as 77 percent.
We're not done yet! The total amount raised will be announced after more than 20 companies hold United Way campaigns this winter and spring.
