From Dollars to Difference: How your donation creates an impact
MEET TILLIE
83-year-old Tillie Groen feels young. Get her laughing and you'll see! She giggles spontaneously like a teenager - anyone could get caught up in the warmth of her chuckle. Tillie first connected with the Stillaguamish Senior Center as a kitchen volunteer, when a sense of isolation compelled her to reach out. Not much later her retirement savings began to disappear and, struggling under the local cost of living, she moved into the Center's low-income housing complex. The center's Karen Kay is thrilled every time she hears the laughter. It's a reminder of the healthy aging they empower in seniors through community investments from United Way. It also reflects just how much Tillie has blossomed since first reaching out to them from poverty and despair. "She makes it easy to remember why we're here," Kay said.

VOLUNTEER

| Volunteers needed to help prepare taxes
If you have experience preparing your own tax return and are comfortable with computers, we need you! Your volunteer time once a week can literally put money back in the pockets of low-income working people to pay for food, rent and other basic needs. Volunteers will be certified by the IRS. Weekday, weeknight and weekend hours are available. Speakers of Spanish, Korean and Russian languages are especially needed. Contact Lark Kesterke, United Way financial stability manager at 425.374.5506 or lark.kesterke@uwsc.org.

| United Way's Car Sweepstakes - enter today!
There's still time to drive change in your community and drive away in a new car. Through United Way's Local Community Fund, you can reach out a hand to one and influence the condition of all. One dollar a week may not even buy a cup of coffee, but when you give one dollar a week to United Way you help kids succeed, build stable families and strengthen communities.

Employees at the Mukilteo School District support United Way and this year's exciting Sweepstakes. You can, too, by visiting uwsc.org. |

| Grants to United Way of Snohomish County
Thanks to the EverTrust Foundation for an $11,000 grant that will provide continued support to the Youth Developmental Assets initiative in "Sharing the Asset Message". This money will aid in the purchase of speaker support materials as well as allow the Marysville Kids Matter committee to initiate a pilot project at Marysville Middle School, where developmental assets will be incorporated into the daily lives of all students.

| Accolades, athletes and United Way:
Stay tuned to your television this Thanksgiving
Be sure to watch the 11th annual NFL & United Way Thanksgiving Halftime Show featuring multi-platinum recording artist, Jesse McCartney. The show will air live on Thursday, Nov. 27, during the 9:30 a.m. game between the Detroit Lions and the Tennessee Titans on CBS.
McCartney's live performance will be the highlight of the halftime show, which focuses on United Way and NFL's commitment to youth health and fitness. The show will encourage young fans to get 60 minutes of exercise each day. United Way is asking NFL fans to support their 10-year goal to get 1.9 million more kids healthy and fit by donating to United Way in-school and after-school fitness programs. Later that evening, CNN will air its CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute special, honoring 10 finalists, including "Hero of The Year" Liz McCartney. McCartney, who has connections with the United Way family, created the St. Bernard Project to help Hurricane Katrina survivors in St. Bernard Parish, a community just outside New Orleans. The St. Bernard Project, which has rebuilt homes for 150 families, is funded by United Way of Greater New Orleans. Also recognized as top-10 finalist was Anne Mahlum, who is associated with United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Mahlum was honored for her "Back on My Feet" program. This year's Top 10 CNN Heroes finalists were chosen from nearly 4,000 nominations from 75 countries. Each finalist received $25,000 for their organization. In addition, McCartney received $100,000 for the St. Bernard Project. | |
