MEET KIM AND MICHAEL

Kim and Michael
Stationed in Iraq with the U.S. Army, Michael LeVasseur was far from home when his mother, Kim, received the grim news that Michael's father was in critical condition at a Minnesota hospital.

She was stunned. How much time did they have? And how could she get word to Michael?

"This is exactly what our United Way-funded Service to the Armed Forces program does," explained Bev Walker, Snohomish County Red Cross program coordinator. "We have been connecting military members like Michael with their families since the Civil War."

Kim had heard of the service. She dialed the number and, less than eight hours later, Michael was airborne for Minnesota.

"The Red Cross did wonderfully to get him there so soon," Kim said, "but it happened too fast, there wasn't anything anyone could do."

There can't always be happy endings to a crisis; but, fortunately, this Red Cross program is available-day or night-to help families prepare and respond, thanks to generous donations to United Way.
