1st Place - Burrowing Owl by Phil Lyon |
|
On his way back from what must have been a terrific adventure in Mohab, Utah; Phil Lyon caught sight of an odd movement out of the corner of his eye in a roadside Prairie dog town. Phil knew that it was no rodent peeking out from a hole in the ground. Not being sure though he pulled over and waited for this very unique shot of a curious Burrowing Owl looking back at him. This small raptor of the plains is a real treat to see and a prize sought after by many avid wildlife watchers and photographers.
Phil is a 4th Grade teacher at Red Rocks Elementary school in Morrison, Colorado. He loves to share his passion for nature with his students and maintains bird feeders outside the classroom windows for their continuing education and enjoyment. Many times they are amazed at what shows up and occasionally Mr. Lyon is politely interrupted from a lecture to learn a new or rare species has arrived at a feeder.
We congratulate Phil Lyon for winning 1st place in the 2010 FRBC Photo Contest jointly sponsored with the Wild Delight Birdseed Company. Phil wins $200 worth of Wild Delight birdseed!

2nd Place - Red Fox with Pups by Gloria Verrastro |
|
Gloria lives in the heart of Ken-Caryl Ranch - a lovely subdivision of single family homes largely jointly inhabited with the usual bird and squirrel suspects. Not so fast however as one morning when a neighbor was about to begin a remodeling project on his back deck, he noticed faint yelps and yips from under the old structure to be demolished. Straining to see what was causing the commotion he soon observed a Red Fox family on parade. Gloria joined the growing spectacle with her camera and got this shot of mom fox taking care of eight youngsters!
Congratulations to Gloria for her 2nd place photo. Her effort is rewarded with $100 of Wild Delight birdseed.
|
3rd Place - Snow Faced Flicker by Darin Ziegler |
|
Darin Ziegler lives is a north Colorado Springs neighborhood that backs to open space which always brings in a bounty of birds. Darin maintains an immaculate bird friendly front yard complete with native plants, water features, and multiple feeding stations. His efforts are routinely rewarded by an almost complete cross section of Front Range species. Darin is an avid wildlife photographer and is sometimes spotted laying in the yard at the ready with camera in hand. A recent Northern Flicker rewarded his patience with this pose after probing deep in the snow looking for treats.
Thanks Darin, your photo wins 3rd Place and $75 worth of Wild Delight birdseed.

Brazil Birding Adventure with Bill Turner Tours |
|
Hyacinth Macaw photo by Bill Eden, 2010
This is an extraordinary opportunity July 31-August 15, 2011 with acclaimed naturalist Bill Turner
Travel to the Amazon Basin, the Pantanal (the world's largest freshwater wetlands), and the scenic mesas and cerrado of Chapada dos Guimaraes. Cruise up a jungle river looking for the Amazonian umbrellabird, razor-billed curassow, sunbittern, king vulture, giant otter, Brazilian tapir, and anaconda.
Our accommodations in the Amazon are at the comfortable Cristalino Lodge where we may see five species of macaw in one day. The lodge's 150 foot tower gives us a bird's eye view of rainforest canopy life such as red-fan parrots and white-whiskered spider monkeys.
The Pantanal is a wildlife paradise. On the 2010 tour, we saw a mother puma and her two half-grown kittens. We'll be visiting a site where there is a good chance for a harpy eagle.
Paulo Boute, an outstanding English-speaking birder/naturalist, will be our guide throughout the trip. Paulo has guided Roger Tory Peterson and ABA notables among his clients.
For further information on trip costs and a detailed itinerary, please contact Bill Turner at (303) 795-5128 or e-mail: [email protected]

February - National bird Feeding Month |
|
photo provided by National Birdfeeding Society
FRBC February Seed Sale is on for the entire month!
Anything birds eat
20 % off
All Month!
FRBC celebrates National Bird Feeding Month with its February 20 percent off anything-birds-eat sale. We love this month long event sponsored by The National Bird Feeding Society>. As with the Society we at FRBC believe the bird feeding and watching hobby is both a great educational pass time and a superb way to aid in conservation. During the cold Front Range winter months many bird food sources are snow covered and wild birds become desperate for high fat and protein diets to keep their high paced metabolisms producing essential body heat. Your help with clean full feeders certainly helps to ensure a good avian survival rate.
One highlight of the National Bird Feeding Month is The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), a "citizen science" project by the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. It will take place this year on February 18-21. All ages can participate in the the GBBC and it is a great way to spend time with friends and family. It is simple, enjoyed by beginner and expert alike, and only takes as little as 15 minutes on any single count day!
The 2011 GBBC will help the Cornell Lab as it attempts to track and answer many questions regarding bird health and population trends. These questions include the timing of birds' migrations, affect of bird diseases, bird diversity in different habitats, cold weather influences, and any species decline.
It is neat that the count can be done almost anywhere - a backyard, apartment balcony, any park, or on public land. The balcony at the Red Rocks Park Trading Post is one great place to do a GBBC. The bird feeders there supplied by us at Front Range Birding have drawn a variety of unique and rare birds to include all three species of Rosy Finch, a Curve Billed Thrasher, and Spotted Towhee. When you add daily January sightings of a Yellow Throated, Harris's, and Golden Crown Sparrow, the trip to scenic Red Rocks is a very special treat .
Join us at FRBC as we also count the birds. Come in or call us with any questions you may have regarding the GBBC. To help with you decision to participate, if you bring us your GBBC count form afterwards, we will give you 25 percent off any bird feeder in stock at the store. If we don't have to one you want we will order it for you! This is a great opportunity to get a high quality, guaranteed Droll Yankee, Brome, Aspects, or Bird's Choice feeder at a great savings.
Find out more about the GBBC by visiting http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc or give us a call at 303-979-2473. Learn more about The National Bird Feeding Society at http://www.birdfeeding.org/. Another great local source of birding information is the Audubon Society of Greater Denver. Give them a call at 303-973-9360.
Thanks for helping feed the birds. We would love to hear what's going on in your natural habitat.
