  Editorial by Angus Cross

Each and every month Warren and I spend about 30 old-man hours  working on the web site, newsletter, and membership in the alumni association. Quite often it gets a little depressing when people opt out, report our newsletter as spam, or not bother to renew their membership. However it seems without fail those down moments get squashed by a complimentary email or someone buying us a beer, or someone new joining.

The challenge continues to be "what can we do or say to encourage the alumni from the 80's and 90's to get on board."

Many of you have children and perhaps even grand children that went to CCHS or Chambly Academy. Please help us by forwarding this newsletter to them. We want them to show pride in their old school and keep the spirit alive.

Near the very bottom of this newsletter on the left you will see forward email Click there to pass this email on to relatives, school friends. Include a personal message asking them to join us.

Thanks for your assistance.

Alumni emails & notes to the Editor

Following the August Edition I received quite a few emails concerning FaceBook versus Alumni Connection, and also concerning the paying of a membership fee to join the alumni association.

Some of the notes were quite lengthy so I have posted them in their entirety to a new web page which I have titled The Alumni Speak

Some of these messages from Alumni were posted to the Alumni Forum. In future it would be appreciated if your comments were posted to Alumni Forum This will allow everyone an opportunity to respond immediately rather than wait until the following month's newsletter.

I used some of the Beer Money I received to upgrade the alumni forum to pro which removed any advertising from the page.

Cegep Champlain

CEGEP Champlain

Most of the graduating class of 2011 are attending CEGEP Champlain this year.

Students in Quebec who intend to pursue post-secondary education must attend a college

before enrolling in a Quebec university. Students who follow a general studies program in Quebec complete six years of primary school (grades 1 through 6), followed by five years of secondary school (grades 7 through 11.

Quebec students complete one grade fewer in total than all other Canadian students before beginning post-secondary studies, ending high school in grade 11 instead of grade 12.
Colleges then prepare students for university or to enter a technical profession.

Most Quebec undergraduate programs are three years in length for Quebec students;
hence, the total number of years of study from primary school through a Bachelor's degree
is the same as in the rest of North America.

1959: Queen and Eisenhower open seaway
The Queen and US President Dwight D Eisenhower inaugurated the 2,300-mile St Lawrence Seaway in Canada that links the Atlantic with the Great Lakes in North America.
Crowds cheered and waved flags, church bells rang out, sirens wailed and bands played as the Royal Yacht Britannia began the first leg of the journey from Montreal harbour to the Great Lakes.

On board were the Queen, representing Canada, and President Eisenhower who could be seen chatting together on deck and waving to the crowds.

Balloons and fireworks were released when the ship's bow passed a symbolic gate at St Lambert Lock made of old timbers from the lock of the Lachine canal which was built to bypass the Lachine rapids. The seaway takes a different route avoiding the rapids and rendering the Lachine canal obsolete.

Then all the whistles and sirens of ships in Montreal harbour went off.

 Association Updates
The Annual General Meeting was held on September 13th. at Chambly Academy in St. Lambert.  All members of the board were in attendance in person or by teleconference line, with the exception of Dave Erskine from Ontario.

Due to a lack of nominations from members for addition or replacement of Directors on the Board, the existing board members were asked to serve for another term.  All agreed to serve but stressed the urgency to recruit new directors from the grad years of 1980 to 1990.

The next scheduled Board Meeting will be held in early December. The possibility of holding another Variety Show this winter, and an All Year Reunion in 2015 will be on the agenda.

 Travel

If you are staying in hotels in the near future we suggest you read this advisory on a new credit card scam.

Hotel/Motel Scam (This one is so simple it is shocking)
This is kinda scary if only because of how simple it is.
I'll bet this works all too often.
You arrive at your hotel and check in at the front desk. When checking in, you give the front desk your credit card (for all the charges for your room). You get to your room and settle in.
Someone calls the front desk and asked for (example) Room 620  (which happens to be your room). Your phone rings in your room. You answer and the person on the other end says the following,  'This is the front desk. When checking in, we came cross a problem  with your charge card information. Please re-read me your credit  card number and verify the last 3 digits numbers at the reverse side of your charge card.' Not thinking anything you might give this person your information, since the call seems to come from the front desk. But actually, it is a scam of someone calling from outside the hotel/front desk. They ask for a random room number. Then, ask you for credit card information and address information. Sounding so professional that you do think you are talking to the front desk.
If you ever encounter this problem on your vacation, tell the caller that you will be down at the front desk to clear up any problems... Then, go to the front desk and ask if there was a problem. If there was none, inform the manager of the hotel that someone called to scam you of your credit card information acting like a front desk employee. This was sent by someone who has been duped........and is still clearing up the mess...

Jim Low

LOW, James William Alexander -  July 24, 1940 - Sept 6, 2011 CCHS Class of 1960, Son of James Reed Low and Ethel Emily Flinn. With profound sadness we announce the sudden death of our father on September 6, 2011 at the Northumberland Hills Hospital. He was a selfless, gentle and loving soul who touched our lives and the lives of so many around him in countless, quiet ways. We cannot imagine a family gathering or school concert without him and his camera. His devotion to us was evident in everything he did. He leaves behind his four children, Carrie (Brian), Cheryl (Jameel), Peter (Kate) and Jeremy (Melissa), his sister Penny and her children and his great nieces, dear friend Eleanor, beloved cousins, and seven adoring grandchildren Lily, Amelia, Nolan, Arlie, Finn, Kate-Lynn and Rissa in whose lives he was a daily presence. He will be greatly missed by his large extended family and many friends from all walks of life. Dad retired to Cobourg from Toronto in 2008 and quickly became a recognizable figure in our community as 'Grandpa Jim'. Perhaps you met him at the Buttermilk Café or at Harden & Huyse Chocolates with cousin Ann or at the beach building sand castles with the grandkids. We invite you to get to know Jim by visiting www.jimlow.com . Dad was a writer, photographer, camper, traveller, astronomer and genealogist. Above all he was a devoted father and grandfather, a role he cherished. He chased solar eclipses from the time he was a young man - just another excuse to see the world! He once wrote a funny story about a set of dirty foot- prints that 'mysteriously' appeared on our living room ceiling. None of us kids would own up to that! But there is nothing mysterious about the handprints he has left on our hearts. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at The Estates at Golden Beach Resort on Sunday, September 18th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Tom Poulton was in the Class of 62....I see that you already have him as deceased but his obit wasn't available for inclusion in your latest newsletter.  Both he and Norman Lamarre were friends of mine and I had no idea either of them was ill.  Harvey Carter would remember Tom - he was a great high school curler - son of Harry who was active in the St. Lambert Curling Club.  Sad that we fall out of touch.  Good that your website lets us know when one of our former school mates has passed away.Below is a copy of Tom Poulton's Obit published in the Montreal Gazette of August 13th, 2011

 Thanks for all you do!

POULTON, Thomas Edward
Passed away at the B.M.P. Hospital in Cowansville on July 11, 2011 at the age of sixty-six.
He was the son of the late Harry and Jean Poulton - formerly of St. Lambert.
Dear father of Jody, Timothy and Robbie. Grandfather of Ryder. He is survived by his mother Jean, his sisters Anne and June, and his niece Natalie and other relatives and friends.
He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.
He was cremated and his ashes scattered by his sons as he requested.
Family and friends gathered for a service revealing their feelings then said their final good-bye.

 Survey Says!

In our August Poll we found that only 54% of alumni are listed on FaceBook.

There is one very active group on Facebook, "If you grew up in St. Lambert or Greenfield Park you might remember ....." Only group members can view the posts. If interested contact  Jack Anderson and ask him for an invite to join. At Present there are about 500 members. Many are from CCHS but there are some Macdonald Cartier alumni in the group.

Here is an example of what you might find:

As Saint-Lambert was dry many citizens drove or walked to taverns and bars in all directions just outside the town. Hotel Lapiniere on Victoria, in Greenfield Park, just south of Simard Boulevard was a popular drinking spot ....
