October 2010, Edition 63,
Members Only Edition
Editorial by Angus Cross

 Angus July
I should know better than to ever write one of these editorials just after reviewing feedback, or lack of it, from non-members. Member responses are so much more positive in nature.

I did up a comparison page on the September survey which was sent out to both association members and non-members. The results are interesting and provide food for thought. I invite all to review the differences and share any thoughts with me that you might come up with.

ALUMNI FLASHBACKS

Andy Little playing pool
Andy Little C'53  playing snooker - something he learned  60 years ago
above the old Victoria theatre in St. Lambert.

Sorry to have fallen out of touch, but I had a deadline to meet for my latest book, Wheeler's Wake  It has now gone off to the printer and I am looking forward to the arrival of the first hard copy later this month.  With nothing pressing to write, I remembered years ago promising an essay on pool - Andy

CCHS Alumni Home Exchange
There was considerable positive response to Sheila Kerr's  C'53 idea of an alumni home  exchange.

I would be interested in the potential of house sharing.  I live in beautiful Wolfville, NS where one can enjoy the vista of Cape Blomidon and watch the tides ebb and flow.  This is a wonderful area.  Catch is: the house would come with a cat! and maybe a dog! - Kathy Phillips C'63

I'd be interested in "home share"
Leslie Keelty C''70 Vancouver, B.C.

Great idea...I want to be on her list to learn more!
Jean McHarg ex-staff Bridgewater, NS

Great idea! But lots involved; security, etc.  Carol Storen C'60 San Francisco CA, USA

If you are interested in pursuing this further please contact Angus Cross
Further action will depend on the response to Sheila's idea. For further information on how this system works we suggest you visit homeexchange.com

Alumni Comments

I read the newsletter quickly last week, and you said it was the "beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning".  What exactly do you mean?  Are you guys quitting the newsletter and the committee if only 111 people are interested?
I for one, love the website and it allows me to check to see if anyone else that I knew in school has joined.  I agree with the people who suggested that maybe the reunions should be spread farther apart.  Like myself, a lot of people live out west or in the US or even farther away, and it is quite expensive to come to Montreal on the May long weekend for the reunion every 5 years.  Airfares are higher, hotel rates are higher and car rentals are higher for that weekend.  It would be nice if we could have it during the summer months when younger people with children can either drive or fly and they don't have to pay for a sitter for 3 or 4 days.
There are so many scenarios that can apply here and people should give more input.  111 participants in the survey is pretty pathetic.  I think I started the survey but never got it finished because I put it away on my desktop to finish when I had more time.  I think I forgot to finish it, didn't I?
People are always SO busy these days.  I think we are all living in a very speedy world since the electronic age has come to us.  I also think we all spend far too much time using our electronic devices.  They start to take over our lives and put an end to communication and family.
Maybe the next reunion should be a family one, and based more on family issues and activities.  Maybe that would get more of the younger crowd interested.  It's difficult to say what will make it work.  Maybe you could put out another survey with more questions and more variety of choices.
I truly hope the newsletter crew can keep it going.  It's been nice to get one every month on my email.  I actually stop to read it and it is always interesting.  Keep up the great work Angus, et al.

Alumni Obituaries
John RowleyOBITUARY JOHN ROWLEY (December 8, 1925 to September 8, 2010) John Rowley passed away suddenly on September 8. He leaves behind his wife of fifty-six years Barbara Hodgson Rowley, his sister Eleanor Ingraham, six children, Brian C'71 (Lorraine), Allyson '72, David C'74(Marie-Pierre), Margo C'76, Michael C'81, and Susan C'83(Frank), and three grandchildren, Eric, Deanne, and Alexandra. As a young man, John excelled in sports, especially hockey, basketball and tennis. A graduate of Queen's University and the University of New Brunswick, he began his career as a teacher, then became a high school principal, before moving to St. Lambert to assume the post of Director of Curriculum and then Director-General of the South Shore Protestant Regional School Board. With his characteristic calm and even-handed approach, he oversaw the school board during a tumultuous time in Quebec's history. Well-respected as an administrator, even by his adversaries, John was instrumental in the introduction of the French immersion program which was subsequently adopted across Canada and around the world. His quiet sense of humour, encyclopedic memory, and steadfast, gentle nature will be sorely missed. A visitation was held at: on Friday, September 17, 2010
