September 2010, Edition 62,
Members Only Edition |
Editorial by Angus Cross | Is it the beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning? Not to be an alarmist but it does seem that the CCHS & CA Alumni Association has reached a crossroads. Recently 35 members have terminated their memberships, and a further 30 members are overdue in renewing. Non members were surveyed on September 4th with results that were not overly optimistic. Of 1,841 non-members surveyed it was found that 279 were either blocked or had non-existent email addresses. Further to that 4 people have opted out, thus blocking any further contact by mass emails. The response rate, or people that actually opened the email inviting them to partake in the survey, was only 28.9%. The survey itself was undertaken by 127 people. After checking the non-member survey we ask that you

Princess Diana's Royal Visit to CCHS, May 1982
Adjoining London's National Gallery is the newly named street "John Prince", named after our high school principal. Soon after the street re-naming ceremony and following her recent visit to Washington, DC., Princess Diana elected to visit Montreal (St. Lambert) - her first visit to Canada, to meet with Mr. John Prince, of whom she had heard so much.
Seen here at Chambly County High, along with the Princess are: left, Mr. Flewwelling, high school Vice-principal, and right, Mr. John Prince, high school Principal.

CCHS Alumni Home Exchange |
I have an idea to explore and it might appeal to many alumni. For several years, my husband and I subscribed to a publication/service called HOME EXCHANGE. We went on many trips in the United States and Europe where we exchanged our home for another. Mind you, at time we had a small apartment in New York City which was very popular, and which we could have exchanged every week, but we only took one or two holidays a year.
Perhaps you have heard of these services. For a fee, you are listed in a publication with all the particulars of your home and where you might be interested in visiting. Each potential 'exchanger' takes care of all the information exchange personally. The task would be to see if anyone would be interested in this - and putting together the master list of potential exchangers.
It occurred to me that after the success of the Reunion (which I wasn't able to attend) that there might be many alumni who would like to visit 'home' and many here at 'home' who would like to go elsewhere . Personally, for instance, I would like to visit Victoria or PEI - and maybe alumni out there would like to use my small apartment in Montreal as well as my home in the Eastern Townships. It does require some set up, but you do have a great deal of information at hand - you have mailing list - and a captive audience and this might appeal to a number of people.
What do you think? Sheila Kerr '53

Further action will depend on the response to Sheila's idea.

Class Contacts |
Class Contacts are needed for each class year from 1950 to 2010
For your appeal for class contacts, I am willing to handle it again for class of 1970, although I was extremely disappointed in the numbers of people I was able to get out to the reunion. Despite speaking to many people and telling them of the reunion, only a handful actually showed up.

We held a gathering of local Calgary people from class of 1970 at my place. In attendance were Maureen Lawrence (Perron), Gail Lee (Thomas), Shelley Soles and Carolyn Donnan, plus several spouses. Here is a picture of our classmates, from left to right is: Maureen, Ron Lee, Gail, Carolyn, Will, Shelley, and Shelley's partner Steve. Unfortunately a few other classmates were unable to attend. - Will Arnold C'70
If you are interested in representing your class year as Class Contact and meet the described qualifications.

Alumni Comments |
I was pleased to see the comments by David Cyr C'62, that appeared in last month's issue were contrary to the opinion of alumni association members. - Angus
Regarding David Cyr's comments in the newsletter, I am really surprised that someone as bright as he is, would not realize the humour of the cartoon, and would actually think that anything can be provided for "free". Fortunately I think that not many people would believe his comments. - Will Arnold C'70 from Calgary, AB
I was a little upset at David Cyr, class of 62 comments that the Alumni is making money off of our members. I realize he is entitled to his own opinions, wrong as they may be. I know that Angus, Warren, & Harvey especially, have been very vigulant as to where every penny has gone. Since David lives so close," Verdun" he could be invited to join your Board of Directors, since there are 3 vacant positions, so he could learn the true facts. On the other had perhaps someone with his attitude would not be a possitive addition to your Board. I know his comments hurt, but please be reassured that the great majority of us have great faith in all of you & appreciate what a super job you are doing. - Carol Bruce C'57, Comox. BC
Ha ha!! You just "got" me with that communique! Someone's talking about me? I'm sending a cheque for the year membership today. Good work! Linda Benoy C'73, Montreal, QC
We thoroughly enjoyed our return to St. Lambert in May and look forward to receiving your newsy monthly web-page e-mail. We are living so far away on Vancouver Island that we now plan our rare eastern odysseys around the CCHS/CA reunions.
We do appreciate that it does take a lot of volunteer effort and money to keep the alumni association going. So we decided it was well worth the investment to commit to the life memberships my wife and I got in May, as did my sister Dorothy Day/Harding.
Dorothy noted that her life membership was recognized in your last monthly web page issue, but ours were not. I didn't think that was a significant oversight since our cheque had been cashed and the money was`probably helping keep the association work going - and the recognition isn't all that important to us. However, I thought it prudent to absolutely confirm our life memberships now that another monthly web page issue is out.
Ed Harding C'63, Jan Harding/Cowell C'66, Courtenay, BC
NOTE: Acknowledgement of Life Membership appeared in June Edition of Alumni Connection.
I for one do not agree with Mr. Cyr's comments, I do not think Angus is interested in oppotunistic tactics. If this was the idea Angus had begun with, I doubt he would have looked to the CCHS Alumni to begin with knowing that most of us are careful with our hard earned income ( to be polite ) ( some of us are down right cheap if we want to own up to it , right Mr Cyr) I look forward to the email I receive from Angus, and enjoy all that is contained in the news letter , I know just how much work goes into such an offering . I think we all should pat Angus and his team on the back each and every time we have to opportunity. If we have opinions such as those of Mr Cyr, well we certainly can talk about them with our peers, but if we are really unhappy with the situation .... Well no one is forcing any one to belong, or receive the news letter so perhaps we might consider other ways of protesting ...... I would not want Angus to feel that his efforts are not worth the hassles and give up on us .... What say you the majority !!!!!!!! Bravo Angus !!!!! ...... Shame on you Mr Cyr !!!! - Douglas Macfie C' 66, Dollard des Ormeaux, QC |

CCHS TEACHERS |
Leonard Orr & Art Smith - CCHS teachers in 1958
I am listed as a 1963 grad but I went back as a geog. and hist. teacher in 1969-70 and 1970-71 before I stopped to raise my two children. In fact I started teaching the same year as Bernie Praw and Helena Bennett whose names are on the teacher alumni list. I also attended the last 3 reunions but missed the former teacher photos each time! Would you please update the former teacher list. - Vivian Trudeau
We have been asked several times by grads who also taught at CCHS to list their names in both Class & Teacher Lists. We decided that we would list in Class Only but do invite you to mention your teaching experience in your profile. Our reasoning being it is simply difficult to list twice due to the restrictions of our database. - Angus Cross |

Saint-Lambert News |
Our condolences to Bev Allen (Collins)C'53 on the passing of her husband Don Allen on September 4th.
Don had been in hospital since previous Sunday night and was doing fairly well but everything fell apart Friday night. We had known he had lung cancer since last November and amazingly he was well right up to a couple of weeks ago. He died peacefully and without any pain or discomfort. We all had a chance to say our goodbyes.
Don never attended CCHS so will not appear in any year books. He did graduate from Sir George Williams University after moving to St Lambert. However, he was well known in the community because he was active in St Barnabas Church, coached Little League baseball and hockey and played golf at the Country Club. We had and still have many wonderful friends in St Lambert. - Bev Allen |
