A recent mass email sent out on May 7th. asking people to Forward the email to  Classmates, etc. has helped in locating some of the missing. Cathy Paquet sent the message on to 50 people, and Bernie Praw at 15 were the 2 main supporters but many more got in on the act by sending to 2 or more.

The downturn in the economy has hurt our membership somewhat as more people are not renewing their membership as opposed to new members joining.

Larry Llewelyn inquired if I was ready to pass the torch to the next generation? Absolutely ! Stand up and be counted, whoever you are.

I encourage all alumni to get behind the Alumni Memorial Garden Fund. I think it is not only a suitable memorial to our departed classmates but probably the best legacy we can leave to future students. I look forward, next May at the reunion, to being able to sit on a garden bench, sipping on a beverage, and reminding myself of all the good times I had a half century ago.

Keeping the Connection
WarrenHead                                     by Warren Mackenzie -  Photo Editor

I found a 1962 graduate named Chris Staples. I walk into Starbucks here in Ancaster and an older gentleman notices my Expos t-shirt (yes, I still wear them) and says "that'll be worth something someday" to which I reply "I have about 40 of them so I'll be rich" ...

We start chatting and next thing you know he's from St-Lambert, lived on Riverside Drive (near Seaway Park), graduated from CCHS 1962 on and on and on - needless to say it was one of those "it's a small world" episodes - he lives here in Ancaster about 1 km from my house. So that's 3 other CCHS graduates within a km.
I told him about the reunion and he would like some information on it.

VivianViviane Dohle, Chambly Academy Class of 2000, Montreal, QC.   Performing Arts

Viviane Dohle went into the IB program at Champlain College after CCHS. After this she was accepted into the very  selective program at the National Theater School of Canada (a maximum of 6 students from national interviews of over  600 applicants). Viviane completed NTS's diploma in Theater Production and Design with distinction. Through sheer determination and hard work she has sky rocketed (at a young age) to the prominent position in Montreal theater as the  technical director at Centaur Theater.

At only 25 years old she is in a position in her career which many spend decades  trying to achieve. Having turned down job offers to transfer to Canada's preeminent stage in Stratford Ontario, cooling  her heels temporarily in her hometown before storming the rest of the theater world, Viviane really belongs as an up-and-comer on CCHS's alumni 'Who's Who.'

Karina Bründl was called to the principal's office during an exam yesterday to learn that she had made history.
The 13-year-old South Shore student found out that she was to receive the first email written by Queen Elizabeth II to members of the public. The queen's message is going to 21 young people from the 16 nations that make up the Commonweath. Their entries were selected for a Buckingham Palace blog celebrating the Commonweath's 60th anniversary.
"I am speechless - it is the queen," said Karina, a Grade 7 student at Chambly Academy in St. Lambert. "I am just overwhelmed."

Bernie We just got back from Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco on another wonderful Chambly trip. This year we had 19 students and 25 adults (includes chaperones) enjoying the splendors of these 3 countries. Even though I will be retired from the school for almost 4 years, I am still organizing the school's trips but my responsibility is adding adults to keep the costs down.

 CRASH by Jack Anderson C'71

On Monday, March 23rd I was driving from home on the West Island to a business meeting in Brossard on a six-lane highway in Montreal, Highway 20, through the Turcot yards, when after coming over the top of a rise in the highway I came upon a traffic jam caused by road repair. I had to stop quite quickly and I was in the slow lane. A couple of seconds later the world exploded!  Read the entire article

I look forward so much to your monthly newsletter and appreciate all you have done to put together the school site.  This IS my connection to "home".  Have not lived in Saint Lambert since 1958 .  Very few visits back and this has really filled a vacancy I had, the wonderful old photos etc. bringing back so many memories.  Thank you.
Marie Venne Hensley C'55

Great job as always.. Loved the newsy/history features.. overall well done ~ a pat on the back to all involved.. Thanks for your hard work and sweat as always guys.. Keep it up.. Maybe should have the 2010 Itinerary in the next issue.. Talk up the events...specially the antique car show and shine.... might get more responces from the group... maybe some one should be heading that event, to cordinate this total social event. Pray for great weather!
Hey~I was just wondering to keep the standards high and for the next generation.. Are you preparing some folk to pass on the torch to..... a little premature, but should be prepared HUH!??
Larry Llewellyn C'65

I was going through the class list of 1970 and noticed my address was incorrect.  I have left the east coast after 30 years to return to my native Eastern Townships so we can be closer to our aging mothers.
It is nice to have solid rock around me again after years of the crumbly sandstone of PEI. I now live in the middle of a sugar bush outside the village of St-Etienne-de-Bolton. Though I attended CCHS for only 2 years, I will probably take in a couple of events at next years reunion even though most of the folks I was pals with are on the missing list.
Many thanks for all the work the newsletter staff does to help keep the old school spirit alive.
Hug a bluenoser for me.
Jim Strew C'70

I've been intending to write to you for ages now, to thank you for the fine job you've been doing with this newsletter.
It's beyond spiritual. I find every issue a joy to read and remember my days at CCHS, and in Saint Lambert, with ever increasing fondness. The latest issue with the Jean Wrigley saga is absolutely inspiring, having grown up with the Milligan's and Bob and John Wrigley while I'd guess my big sister Robin skated as a little girl with Jean.

The Seaway anniversary notes are especially interesting to me having grown up just down (up) the street on Sandford and observed the digging in places where we (Murray Sandell, Fred Ward, Gerry Ascah to guess a few) used to walk in the river on the way to Gull Island where we'd sit and contemplate swimming to Sainte Helene's Island, only a stone's throw away.  I would guess 90% of the 1959 CCHS graduating class crammed Seaway facts for their French oral exam that year, although even cramming for 50 hours wouldn't have helped me.

I do have some interesting pictures which I may send to you in the future but being the supreme ludite of Hemmingford (and proud of it) it will take some time for me to figure out how to do it.

The reason for this long winded note is to advise you that I wish to volunteer my services to your committee in any way I can (except accounting which is covered, I think, by my old hockey buddy Gordon "Mouse" Richardson). My first effort could be the 1959 Class Rep. for the upcoming reunion and ongoing. I see you have taken on this task, I guess by default, as I don't remember you as being in this school year. In any event thanks a lot Angus (or is it Gus?) for all the fantastic work, keep it up but take it easy too, and keep healthy.
Alex Ross C'59

Thanks for publishing my letter (see April edition).  Several family members, also CCHS grads, later expressed to me their support of the point it made.

That said, I wanted to tell you I enjoy the newsletter very much.  I look forward to each issue and save every one for easy access and future reference.  The work you put into it is greatly appreciated and I sincerely thank you for all your efforts.
 Brock Cummings C'76

I fully understand the frustration of trying to set up a site hoping to have an influx of interested people.  One thing is that we have realize that the 20/80  index still rules, even in these times of instant communication .  If one gets close to 20 percent participation then we have to count ourselves lucky.

I just have to look at the people I know who attended CCHS - family members first and foremost   my older cousin Watson Anderson, his sister Jill,  my younger cousins Susan Anderson, and June Anderson , my younger  Gordon Macfie ,  my own sister  Diane (Macfie) Loucks, and my own son Eric Macfie   out of this lot you have unfortunately only me and I am not a great catch .   This lot covers a number of years  at  CCHS ...

Then there are my childhood friends from Curzon Street , the Howes, the Burtons, the Hughes, the Clarks ( well one Clark) , and the Lewis girls . None of them appear to be very interested, yet all of them were more involved in CCHS affairs than I every was.

While  I know that I appreciated the efforts of several of the teaching staff - Mr Lee and  Miss Lee among my favourites , to excel in my own education, I am certain that the others have many more wonderful memories of thier days  at CCHS than I do . I was only interested in getting through the courses and passing the exams . The others  got involved in High School projects , politics, and sporting events. My son even gave a shot at running for Student  Council President , yet the several times  I have spoken  to him about joining . I have  always received a non positive response.

The older we get the more we look back to good times in the past, perhaps that is the problem with  participation. ..............................

Douglas Macfie C'66

Some things we keep. Like a best friend who moved away or a
classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make life
important, like people we know who are special ... And so, we keep
them close in heart and mind and spirit.   To me, this is the essence of the CCHS site.  Robert Lomon C'63

City of Saint Lambert News
Saint-Lambert inks agreement with Groupe Savoie:
construction of the CHSLD gets the green light!

Saint-Lambert, April 8, 2009 - On April 3, the City of Saint-Lambert reached anagreement with Groupe Savoie, officially confirming the construction of the future South Shore Residential and Long-Term Care Facility (CHSLD) in Saint-Lambert. According to Mayor Sean Finn: "This agreement gives effect to the consensus obtained in 2006 between the Riverside School Board, the Centre de santé et des services sociaux de Champlain, the MNA for Laporte, and the citizens of Saint-Lambert living in the area. The implementation of this project will allow the Riverside School Board to
invest the $4.5 million it received for the sale of the land in new facilities for Chambly Academy High School. It also provides for the creation of a 30,900-m2 park bordering Brixton Avenue, representing 40% of the area of the land that was purchased. At last, following many years of discussion and negotiations, a CHSLD will be built on the territory of Saint-Lambert
."

Under the terms of this agreement, which was adopted by City Council at a special meeting held on March 30, 2009, an 18,900-m2 area of land adjoining Tiffin will be sold for $1.2 million. The cross-shaped, five storey building will border the road, and will occupy 17.5% of the area. Once built, the facility will have 200 long-term care beds and will provide jobs for several hundred people in Saint-Lambert. Saint-Lambert's City Manager, Michčle V. Lortie, added, "We will be working in close collaboration with the project's leaders to ensure that the construction is carried out according the terms of the agreement and with the least possible inconvenience to area residents. The CHSLD is scheduled to open in the fall of 2010."
"Finally, Saint-Lambert will have a health facility that citizens have been asking for for many years, a 1.4-km-long linear park, which includes the 'green lane,' a refurbished high school, and new sports facilities that will be available to Saint-Lambert residents for a variety of recreational activities," concluded Mayor Fin

Groundbreaking ceremony in Saint-Lambert for the future CHSLD
Saint-Lambert, April 24, 2009 - At the official ground breaking ceremony on the site of the future Saint-Lambert CHSLD, Mayor Sean Finn remarked that "this major realization for our community is made possible thanks to the consensus obtained between the Riverside School Board, the Centre de santé et des services sociaux de Champlain, Nicole Ménard, the MNA for Laporte, and the citizens of Saint-Lambert living in the area."
Saint-Lambert welcomes the construction by Groupe Savoie of this seniors' care facility. Mayor Finn recalled that "
twenty-five percent of the citizens of Saint- Lambert are 65 years of age and older. Our aging population demands that we provide for the growing needs of a significant portion of the population now: the groundbreaking for the construction of the future CHSLD is a concrete response to
the needs of hundreds of our fellow citizens
."
By choosing to live or work in the new Saint-Lambert facility, patients, residents, and staff will benefit from a vast location in a natural setting and green environment for which Saint-Lambert is known.
"
Following a rigorous bidding process, Groupe Savoie is proud to have been awarded the mandate for this important project. Our own investment in this venture is sizeable, and, in this respect, we are very pleased to have chosen Saint-Lambert as the site on which to build this facility. With our know-how and integrated building
methodology, our management, operations, and financing structures, we are able to offer the highest quality service. In collaboration with all the various partners, this project is sure to be hugely successful
," said Eddy Savoie, founder and Chairman of the board of directors of Groupe Savoie.
"We hope that the seniors who will benefit from the services offered by the CHSLD will be welcomed and supported by the younger population of Saint-Lambert, an active and responsive community known for its volunteering, a community value that is encouraged and valued by the city's elected officers and the municipal administration," concluded Mayor Finn.
